The Lethbridge Steel female tackle football team packed their gear and headed down to Raymond to host the Edmonton Storm on Saturday afternoon.
However, the Steel’s scoring woes continued as the Storm won the game 55-0.
“I think all things considered, it was good see some improvement,” said Steel head coach Mike Peters.
“I mean honestly, I felt like Edmonton had to work a lot harder to actually to kind of get in the end zone. It was nice to see the ladies kind of respond to the week that we had. We were down I think seven players with COVID and then we had a couple absences. We were kind of patchwork together a little bit this week. But ultimately the ladies pulled together and they didn’t quit.”
Peters thought the team was more sure in their alignments and he saw throughout the game that the players were in positions to make plays.
The Steel have been shut out in both of their games this far.
“I think in some aspects as a coaching staff we kind of have to re-evaluate maybe some of the things that we’re doing,” said Peters.
“Ultimately as a coach, you don’t want to try and constantly put a square pick through a round hole. So we’re kind of looking at, ‘Hey where can we possibly move some players to maximize their skill sets to hopefully be able to create some more success on the offensive side of the ball.”
Peters thought it was hard with players down due to COVID, but says ultimately the players that were there realized kind of the urgency that was needed.
“Obviously, you’d like to be a bit more competitive,” he said.
“But we as a team are so young that we’re just really beginning to kind of get our foot in as far as being football players. I think the ladies going in knew that it was going to not be maybe our highest level that we could play at.”
The team will hit the road for the next two games to finish the regular season and Peters agreed the trip will create bonding for the players. “Yeah, there something to be said to be able to go on the road and whether it’s being stuck in a hotel room for a night or what not, it can allow the team to come together a bit more,” he said.
