G.S. Lakie to drop band program, citing lack of interest

After seeking feedback from current grade 6 and grade 7 students, G.S. Lakie Middle School has decided to remove traditional band as an option due to lack of interest.
The Lethbridge School Division said in a statement that the delivery of option selections is decided upon by individual schools.
“School administration is guided by student feedback and the strengths of the staff in these situations. Specific to G.S. Lakie Middle School, the selection of options was based on expressions of interest for the 2022/2023 school year,” reads the statement.
The statement continues by explaining that the traditional band format of music delivery experienced a low level of student interest.
“The status of the traditional format, along with the low expression of student interest, was brought to Lakie’s School Council on two occasions. School Council supported the decision to move ahead with a breadth of options that supported fine arts in a variety of ways including General Music, Guitar, Dance, Drama, Production Performance, Instrumental Performance and many others.
At this time, Lakie is also exploring the potential for offering traditional band for students as an afterschool program,” reads the statement.
