Mixed results for Lethbridge FC soccer clubs on home field

Both Lethbridge FC soccer teams had two home games this past weekend and came out with different outcomes.
For the men’s team, they could not buy a goal as they were shutout by the Edmonton Scottish 2-0 on Saturday and by the same score to the St. Albert Impact on Sunday.
Despite both defeats, head coach Mark Meerkerk thought the players played well the entire weekend.
“You know just some bad breaks really,” said Meerkerk.
“That’s what happens when you make a mistake, you usually get scored on.”
Meerkerk says both games had similar outcomes.
“So these couple of teams are both in the top of their division in Edmonton,” he said.
“So I think we faired pretty well this week. We learned a little bit about ourselves and that’s what’s important.”
Meerkerk felt as though there was not a lot of frustration with the lack of offence and that the team has to be patient.
“If it’s there, it’s there,” he said after Sunday’s defeat.
“I mean they took a lot of shots, we didn’t. We probably could’ve taken a few more shots and seen what happened; we didn’t today. We decided to keep position a little more in the final third and that’s what happens.”
Meerkerk said, “But I think each week we’ve grown, each week we’re getting better and better and I think the results are going to start coming.”
The men are still seeking that first win as their record is 0-5-1.
The girls team had to have a short-term memory over the weekend as they rebounded from a 7-0 loss on Saturday to the Calgary Blizzard to beat the Edmonton Green and Gold 4-0 on Sunday.
“It was definitely good to bounce back after Saturday and get that win for sure,” said women’s FC coach John D’Agnone.
“Saturday was tough. We played that game with one less player. We probably had 10 players that game. Not only did we not have any subs on the bench , we played with one less player in all but three minutes of that game. So that was really tough.”
Sunday saw a near full squad for the women.
“We had a starting 11 and had one substitute on the bench and that right there makes a massive difference,” he said.
“I think the mindset is different straight away and yeah they played really well. I think we probably played as well as they did the first game of the season when we beat the Blizzard team. This is probably our best game since then.”
D’Agnone thought the games weren’t so much about wins and losses, but more about getting players out to buy into the league.
“Just trying to get players committed and getting excited about AMSL again after two off years with COVID I think was the more important thing,” he said.
“And probably getting a win on Sunday is going to help with that I hope.”
The women sit in third place with a 4-3 record.
