If you’re a young player and interested in rugby, there are a couple of camps in the city next week that may be worth checking out.

The Lethbridge Rugby Club will be hosting a free Alberta Rugby Junior Association come try-it event on Aug. 3.

Players’ ages 6-10 will go from 5-6 p.m. and the 11-to-15-year-olds from 6-7 p.m.

“It’s just important so that we can encourage the growth of the sport and getting  kids to come out and try it out at a younger age is definitely important,” said Savanna Collison, an organizer.

“We just want to utilize every resource we have to get the sport as well known in the south as we can.”

Collison said it’s not so much a practice as it is just kind of an experience of rugby.

“So we set up a bunch of different activities and kids just kind of come out,” she said.

“Depending on numbers, we’re able to do a little bit more hands on things coaching wise with lower numbers. But we’re hoping for lots of numbers and just getting the kids out and playing lots of games, so they leave with a fun experience.”

AJRA will be bringing down a large blow-up field for kids to enjoy.

The University of Lethbridge in conjunction with AJRA will be hosting a Horns Junior Rugby Camp from Aug. 2-4 next week at the Community Stadium next to the campus.

The camp is for ages 7-10 from 10 a.m.- noon and ages 11-14 from 1-3 p.m. each day,

“This camp is a little more advanced, just trying to get a little bit more skill development for the kids,” said Collison.

“Get them more touches with the ball, more running, more experience and really focusing on building more skill.”

Sessions will be ran more like practices.

“And they’ll be a little bit more intense and structured. But still have the aspect of fun and getting the kids some touches on the balls.”

No experience is required as long as players meet the age requirement.

Both Collison and  U of L teammate Keegan Brantner will be conducting both events.

Registration can be done at communityprograms.ulethbridge.ca and questions can be directed to Graeme.moffat@uleth.ca.
