The Tim Hortons Brier provided a huge financial boost to the host city earlier this year.
A report prepared by Sport Tourism Canada in May showed the event that ran March 4-13 at the Enmax Centre supported almost $16.8 million of economic activity in the Lethbridge area.
The total net economic activity for Lethbridge generated by the Brier was $8.4 million. Net economic for Alberta was $10.3 million and $12.6 million for Canada as a while.
The Brier supported tax revenues of $3.9 million across the country.
The report is contained in the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce “The Voice of Business” newsletter.
According to consultant Derek Mager, the combined spending of staff, spectators, media, out-of-town participants and others who came to the city for the national mens curling championship, combined with expenditures by Brier organizers totalled slightly less than $13.2 million. The report says the Brier supported just under $19.7 million in total economic activity for the province.
Expenditures included $6.2 million in salaries and wages for 137 jobs. Of those 128 jobs and $5.4 million in wages and salaries were kept locally.
