Hurricanes rookies hit the ice for camp

The Lethbridge Hurricanes rookie camp of 42 players took to the ice for two games yesterday and today at the Enmax Centre.

Will Sharpe was 11th overall  pick in the 2022 Prospects Draft and got his first taste of what a Western Hockey League camp is like.

“It was fun,” said South Delta prodcuct, after his first ice session

“It’s a good new experience, (I’m)glad to keep going through with this camp, and yeah I had a good time.”

Sharpe said all the people are trying to prove a point to people watching and they’re all trying to make this team and get noticed by the scouts.

“So I feel like everybody is working as hard as they can,” he said.

“So it’s good competition out there. Yeah it  makes you really want to work.”

His goal at the camp is to be the best he can be and play good throughout the whole camp.

He has been feeding off of rookies who had experience with the club last year with the likes of Tristen Doyle, Miguel Marques and Trae Wilke.

“They’ve been guiding me through a little bit too,” he said.

It is the first rookie camp since 2019 and for Marques it is an opportunity for him to get his legs back under him and playing hockey again.

“I think the biggest thing is being a leader and helping the other guys coming into camp and making sure what they’re doing all the time,” said Marques.

Marques suited up for 10 regular season games and all four playoff games last season.

“It’s been a huge help,” said Marques on last season’s experience.

“I have a lot of confidence playing with the older guys. Obviously it’s hard and tough, faster and stronger but it’s been a lot of help and the guys made me feel comfortable; so it’s been awesome and I’m just able to go out and play my game.”

Head coach Brent Kisio said it’s exciting to be back.

“It’s nice  to be back in our building and see the guys on the ice,” said Kisio.

“It’s the first time we’ve had a rookie camp in a while. It’s nice to see these guys on the ice and playing the way they are. I think after our first game we’re pretty happy.”

Kisio said it’s an important part of our development process to these guys right now.

“(And) kind of let them know what they have to work on to make our team in  the future, he said.

“It’s nice to have it.”

Rookie games will resume today with the  games going from 9-11:30 a.m. and 5- 7:30 p.m.
