Vehicle theft nets 45 days for accused

A 31-year-old man who faces criminal charges in Turner Valley southwest of Calgary, has received a jail sentence for offences he committed in Lethbridge earlier this summer.
Kyle James Reynar pleaded guilty Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court to charges of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and failure to comply with release conditions. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, but given credit for 21 days he has already spent in custody, leaving 24 days to serve on the two offences.
On July 29 Coaldale RCMP observed a suspicious vehicle parked in a residential driveway, and after checking the licence plate learned the Dodge pickup truck had been stolen from a farm near Coalhurst. When Reynar exited the residence and “took ownership” of the vehicle, he was arrested.
The following month, on Aug. 26, police went to a northside home just after 10 p.m. to confirm Reynar was adhering to previous release conditions that required him to live at the residence on Foxbend Crescent and obey a curfew between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. A woman who answered the door told police Reynar had left several days before and took all his belongings.
“He had overstayed his welcome and left on his own accord,” the Crown told court.
Lethbridge lawyer Vince Guinan explained that although Reynar “has had a drug problem in the past,” he is doing better and looking into attending a detox facility and drug treatment programs in Edmonton.
Additional Lethbridge charges, including possession of stolen property over $5,000, making/possessing identity documents, and possession of a stolen credit card, return to court Sept. 19. Charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and failure to comply with release conditions, return to Turner Valley court for a bail hearing on Sept. 27.
