Coyotes win Friday night thriller

The Chinook High School Coyotes football  team grinded out a 21-13 win over their cross-town rival Catholic Central Cougars in front of a boisterous crowd on Friday night at Community Stadium.

The Coyotes were down 7-0 at half time but stormed back in the second half with  21 straight points and held on for the win.

“A win’s a win, no matter how it comes,” said Coyotes head coach Nick Straat.

“So we’re happy to get the win.”

The Coyotes felt  everything went against them in the first half.

“You know they capitalized on our mistakes,” said Straat.

“We weren’t getting the calls that we thought we were going to get and we’re making the mistakes ourselves, we’re making our own turnovers, (and) nothing they were doing … We just told the boys at half time we’ve got to play our game, there’s nothing we can do about that other stuff. We just fix our mistakes and things should fall into place.”

Straat gave the Cougars players credit for giving it their all until the final whistle.

“We told our boys just that, this game isn’t over until the final whistle goes,” said Straat.

“So we’ve got to look out for everything they’ve got and we saw in the third quarter they started to go deeper in the playbook; they’re trick plays and things like that and we’re just trying to tell guys, OK do your job, stay patient and things will go our way.”

Catholic Central head coach Jonathan Dyck could not be reached for comment after the game.
