Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s soccer teams wrapped up the regular season portion of the schedule with two wins and a loss in Raymond over the weekend.
The women Kodiaks opened with a 3-2 loss to Red Deer Polytechnic on Saturday.
Sofia Quinteros opened the scoring for Red Deer at 8:21 of the first half to get the 1-0 lead.
The Kodiaks’ Ashley Sazalski tied the game up at 20:57.
Quinteros scored her second goal of the match at the 61st minute to pull Red Deer ahead 2-1.
Red Deer’s Jenica Swartz padded their lead to 3-1 at 87:02.
LC made it close at the end as Jayna Timinski scored with 30 seconds to go to make the game 3-2.
“Honestly, I think that in our mind as a coaching staff, we felt we deserved to win or at least get a tie out of yesterday’s game against Red Deer,” said LC head coach Sean Carey.
“We had some quality opportunities and you know the girls move the ball all around really well and we were hoping to leave with something out of that game because that means Red Deer finished at the top É We can take a lot of positives out of it.”
LC rebounded on Sunday as they shutout the University of Alberta-Augustana 3-0.
Sazalski and Montanna Rousselle with two goals supplied the offense in the win.
“Augustana’s a tough team to break down, they play very defensively, and we just had to be patient and wait for the opportunities to come,” said Carey.
The girls finished the regular season with a 7-4-1 record.
As for the men, they finished their season with a 2-2 draw with Red Deer Polytechnic on Saturday.
Kaidri Bornyi opened the game’s scoring to give Red Deer a 1-0 lead at 9:48.
LC’s Brandon Francis tied the game up at 27:56, however, Red Deer would score right at the half time off the foot of Ajdin Sarcevic to take 2-1 lead into the second half.
The Kodiaks would salvage the tie at the 74th minute as Vincent Dyck found the back of the net.
“It was probably our best game that we’ve played or one of them for sure, ” said Carey.
“We kept the ball well; we moved it well. We got a red card in the 44th minute which was pretty tough. Our goalie got sent off for a deliberate hand ball. We played the whole second half down a man. But the boys battled and battled, and yeah we able to pull off a tie and that’s a big confidence booster moving forward into championships.”
The men’s regular season record was at 3-3-4.
The games also recognized graduating players in Meaghan Welby on the women’s side and Mauricio Rosas on the men’s team.
Both teams will now prepare to host the ACAC Soccer Championships in Raymond from Oct. 28-30.
