The Swift Current Broncos were able to fend off a late push from the Lethbridge Hurricanes to win 5-4 on Wednesday night at the InnovationPlex in Swift Current.
It was the Broncos who got on the board first at 13:07 of the first period, as they went down on a 4-on-1 and Owen Pickering tapped in a Raphael Pelletier cross-crease pass to make the game 1-0 for the home team.
Josh Fluker also drew an assist on the goal.
Swift Current made the contest 2-0 just 3:27 into the second period on powerplay, as Josh Filmon one-timed in his fifth goal of the season from Pelletier and Mathew Ward.
The Canes Hayden Smith cut the Broncos lead to one as he hustled down the left wing and beat Broncos goalie Gage Alexander underneath the arm at 10:07 of the second period.
Tristan Zandee notched the assist on Smith’s third of the season.
Ward one-timed a pass from Conor Hvidston on the powerplay at 16:42 of the second period to restore the Broncos two-goal lead to 3-1. Pickering also got an assist on Ward’s fourth of the season.
Lethbridge cut the lead to 3-2 at 4:19 of the third period as Tyson Laventure shot the puck under Alexander’s glove hand on the powerplay from Cole Shepard and Logan McCutcheon. Shepard later did a lap around the Broncos zone and came down the slot and beat Alexander to tie the game at three at 11:46 of the third period.
Brayden Edwards drew the helper on the goal.
The Broncos responded with goals 20 seconds a part to take a 5-3 lead after Shepard’s goal.
Ward pushed the Broncos ahead 4-3 as he shot one off and over the blocker of Canes goalie Jared Picklyk at 13:01 of the final frame.
Former Cane Kayden Sadhra-Kang drew a helper on Ward’s second of the night.
Sam McGinley notched his first goal of the season at the 13:21 mark of the third from Braeden Lewis to give Swift Current a 5-3 lead.
Jett Jones managed to slide in Lethbridge’s fourth goal of the game at 17:06 of the third from Laventure and Chase Pauls.
Lethbridge had 28 shots and Swift Current managed 25 shots.
The Hurricanes went 1-for-4 and Swift Current had two goals on three opportunities on the powerplay.
With the loss, the Hurricanes record drops to 5-8 on the season and the Broncos improved to 3-7 with the win.
The Saskatoon Blades will be at the Enmax Centre on Saturday night to play the Hurricanes.
