Kodiaks women’s soccer off to semi-finals

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s soccer  team are through to the semi-finals at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s  ACAC Soccer Championships as hosts in Raymond after a nail-biting 1-0 win over the Keyano College Huskies on Friday.

The game was 0-0 at halftime before the Kodiaks broke through at the 56th minute, as Taylor Hrycun scored  as the ball bounced around the net after an Olivia DePasquale corner kick.

“Absolutely brilliant,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey.

“You know what, they’re just a group of girls that give everything every time they step on the field and they did that again today. We were the lucky ones to get a break from the goal and you know what when it fell to us, we took it, and near the end there we could have had another  two or three goals. We stayed with what we talked about for the last three months and now we’re playing for a medal for a third year in a row.”

Kodiaks Player-of-the-Game, Meaghan Welby, thought it was the best game the team has played all season.

“I think we came into this game  knowing that we had to leave it all on the field and that’s exactly what we did,” said Welby.

“We had nothing to lose out there. All the girls came (and) played with passion. We communicated, we did everything we wanted to do all season and we just left it all out there and it shows.”

The Kodiaks will play their semi-final at 10 a.m. today against Red Deer Polytechnic.

The other women’s semi-final will be contested between Concordia University Edmonton and NAIT.

The men’s team’s season ended after losing 2-0 to The King’s University Eagles in their  quarterfinal.

The men’s semi-finals will see NAIT Ooks versus Keyano College and The King’s University versus SAIT on Saturday. 

The bronze medal games for both  the women’s and men’s will go Sunday at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. respectively.

The  gold medal matches will be at 3 p.m. for the women and 5:30 p.m. for the men. The schedule can be found at www. kodiaks.ca/ 2022acacsoccerchampionships.
