Kodiaks volleyball end road trip with wins

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks volleyball teams finished their season-opening five game road trip ,which lasted over three weekends, with two wins a piece up north.

The men’s team won both of their matches 3-0 at Northwestern Polytechnic (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) on Friday and the same match win at NAIT (31-29, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday.

“The team played extremely well on the weekend,” said men’s head coach Greg Gibos.

“We were really happy with the group’s preparation heading into the weekend as they were very intentional at practice. It was our best week of preference, and this translated into some steady performances in some difficult gyms to win in.”

Gibos praised the play of rookie Gavin Moes and the growth he has seen from him early on.

“He’s a first-year athlete learning how to pass and attack in a post-secondary offence,” said Gibos.

“He’s already racked up 30 kills in his first five matches as well as being top 5 in the conference in service aces and blocks per set. When we talk about a first year leading in these categories it speaks to how badly he craves to be excellent.”

For his efforts, he was awarded player of the game at NWP on Friday.

The women’s team swept NWP in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) and went the distant five-sets to beat NAIT (20-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-10) the next night.

“You know a win is a win,” said head coach Anna Schwark.

“We love the wins. So, the outcome, obviously we’re very happy about. But (we) definitely realized we didn’t really play to our potential or what we kind of felt our standards should have been this weekend.”

Schwark thought the girls had two slow starts.

“Luckily, we kind of got out of it a little bit earlier on the Friday. Saturday was tough, obviously going to five. So, we kind of dug ourselves into a bit of a hole against NAIT there in the first two sets. But I’m just really happy at the resiliency we showed. Like at the end of the day you just want to keep getting that one per cent better and you just wanting to keep learning as much as you can even when things are tough.”

Both teams will play their home openers on Friday with the women’s game at 6 p.m. and the men’s game at 8 p.m. at Val Matteoti Gym against The King’s University.

LC will play Concordia University of Edmonton

on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
