Dinos drop Pronghorns

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team fell to the University of Calgary 69-61 at the 1st Choice Savings Centre on Friday night.

“I mean I give Calgary all of the credit,” said Horns coach Dave Waknuk.

“They play with a lot of purpose and a lot of tempo in the fourth quarter and they really just came out hot. And we just got in a bad run, and against good teams you can’t slow down for a couple of minutes ,and we did,and they took advantage of it. So I give them credit how aggressive they came out in the fourth quarter.”

Urgency came to mind for Waknuk when asked about what the difference was in the game.

“I thought we would do something well in one end and it’s just trying to connect it to the other end,” said Waknuk.

“At moments, we had great flashes, (and) against good teams you just can’t make mistakes. I mean we make a mistake defensively or a one-minute mistake offensively and  they’d punish us for it with that. So against good teams, we’ve just got to take care of the basketball and just you have to plug the mistakes.”

Waknuk thought the mistakes came from defensive rotations, fouls and rushing decisions on the offense.

“I told the team, I think it proves that we can play with the best,” said Waknuk.

“We’re right there with them. We just have to find consistency for all 40 minutes and we’re close, we’re getting there and thing are improving. We’ve just got to find the energy to comeback and play that tempo tomorrow.”

Guard Jessica Haenni thought the team ran out of energy and confidence by the last quarter.

“We always talk about making sure that we play to win and playing not to lose,” said Haenni.

“So  we’ll make sure we have to bring that into tomorrow — like play to win the whole time.”

Haenni thought the team made a few critical mistakes.

“And that really takes the wind out of you,” she said.

“So taking care of the ball  tomorrow and continuing to push the pace will help us for sure.”

Haenni led the way with 14 points followed by Kyra Collier with 10 points.

Tobore Olome had nine rebounds for the Horns.

The men’s U of L team beat U of C 83-76 in the second game on Friday.
