Man charged in ‘unfounded’ van explosive incident

Herald photo by Al Beeber Police vehicles are parked across 13 St. S. behind a cube van which was the focus of a report of an explosive device. Police evacuated some homes as a precaution. The report was later determined to be unfounded. After further investigation, police identified a male subject who was arrested without incident at a home on the 1600 block of Scenic Drive South.

Lethbridge police were called to the scene of a potential explosive device inside a van before determining the report to be unfounded.

Police arrived on scene along the 1000 block of 13 Street South on Tuesday afternoon at around 12 p.m. responding to a report of an explosive device inside a moving company van.

The vehicle was parked and all occupants safely exited. According to police, the company received a call claiming that the device was going to be remotely detonated. 

Police subsequently searched the van and no explosives were located.

A number of homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution, with those impacted being contacted directly by police.

Members of the public were directed to avoid the area until further notice.

Following further investigation a male subject was identified and arrested without incident at a residence along the 1600 block of Scenic Drive South.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
