Kodiaks battle with Lions

For the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, it was a successful weekend against the Ambrose University Lions.
The women’s volleyball team (8-8) split their games with the division-leading Lions (13-5), having lost on home court on Friday night (19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19) before winning on the road on Saturday (20-25, 25-25, 25-23, 25-14).
The Kodiaks lost the first set on Saturday and clawed back to win the next three sets in what was their first victory of the second half of the season.
“ Yeah, really important,” said Anna Schwark, Kodiaks’ women’s volleyball head coach.
“We knew the second half was going to be tough and holy cow it really was. Like Lakeland (and) Keyano were tough, and then kind of knowing we had Ambrose looming and their record.There was a lot of stress going into Friday and we did OK. (We) didn’t get the result we wanted. So just having this to kind of break everything up and change that losing streak around to a winning one, it just really pumps us up to play Medicine Hat this coming week. It just gives us like kind of a renewed sense of comfort and confidence that we’re still working on the right things.”
Middle Eryka Woods had a strong game with 12 kills and 14 total attempts in the win.
“She didn’t start on Saturday and we had Claire Armstrong in there and she did a great job,” said Schwark.
“But when you kind of get stuck you kind of just make those subs to slow the game down and give hitters something different to look at. So she just went out I think with that fire of knowing she didn’t get that start and wanting to prove that she was going to make the most of that opportunity out there. She was reading that setter so well. She knew exactly where she should be at the perfect time.”
Alyssa Pavka had six digs on Saturday.
“She was just risking her body and a relentless pursuit of the ball constantly,” said Schwark.
As for the men’s volleyball team (12-4), they took care of business with three-set wins over Ambrose with scores of (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) on Friday and (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) on Saturday.
“The last two weeks have been all about trying to get better as a team and iron out some kinks that both Keyano and Lakeland exposed,” said coach Greg Gibos.
“For us, it was a chance to work mindfully on some areas of our game that needed improvement without having the pressure of game planning for multiple teams.”
Gibos felt that Ambrose (7-11) was better that their record showed.
“Ambrose is (a) much better team than their record shows as the ACAC is extremely deep this year,” said Gibos.
“We really wanted to push ourselves to hopefully claim one of the top two seeds and ideally avoid having to play a team like Ambrose in the play-in game for championships.”
Gavin Moes had 15 kills and 23 total attempts on Friday and on Saturday had 13 kills and 23 total attempts.
Brother Nolan had 15 kill and 23 attempts on Saturday and Friday had nine kills and 20 total attempts.
“It’s been great to see both Nolan and Gavin have great weekends,” said Gibos.
“Nolan has been returning from bit of an injury, while Gavin has really started to figure out how to be a dominant player after five months of post-secondary action.”
The Kodiaks men’s basketball team (13-3) have won four in a row after beating Ambrose 84-74 on Friday night and a 106-68 win at home on Saturday. Paycen Blackmore led the way with 18 points followed by Mason Hoffman’s 10 points on Friday.
For starters on Saturday, Blackmore had 14 points and Hoffman scored 13.
Adyn Card led the reserves with 18 points and Declan Peterson had 15 points.
The women’s team beat the Lions 55-44 on Friday and followed with a heartbreaking overtime 58-53 loss on Saturday at Lethbridge College.
Courtney Deemter had 16 points and Kitawna Sparks put up 12 in the win on Friday.
Sparks had 19 points in the losing effort on Saturday.
