By Lethbridge Herald Obituaries on February 4, 2023.

MCMILLAN, John MCMILLAN With sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Edward Roy McMillan our Dad, aka “Jack” and “Jocko” on January 20, 2023. Born in Lethbridge on March 7, 1931 to Gertrude and Roy, Jack signed up early with the RCAF leading him to his most treasured career as a pilot. He found it remarkable that his lifetime experiences spanned driving a horse and buggy from Lethbridge to the YMCA camp in Waterton at age 14 to flying supersonic jets during the Cold War. Jack married his high school sweetheart Vivian Lecog. Together they raised 3 children, Randy, Susan (George) and Lori (Bill), living from coast to coast and overseas. Upon retirement, Jack adopted the snowbird life, spending decades traveling to Arizona where he found companions ‘of his ilk” for fun and adventure. When no longer able to drive those great distances, Jack retired to his hometown, reuniting with old friends and family. He especially enjoyed his new shuffleboard group at the Gardens.
Predeceased by his parents, brother Wally and second wife Shirley. Jack is survived by his sister Arlene, brother Stuart (Faye), numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Jocko loved the sun and wishes to rest under a desert saguaro.

Bob and Ann made their home in California for over 50 years, moved to Orting, Washington for nine years, then settled back in Modesto in 2013. Ann worked as a bookkeeper for several years, but her joy was raising her children. After she retired, Ann took joy in volunteering for the Modesto Health Department for several years, enjoying the camaraderie there. When Bob retired, Ann got him volunteering too. They were a pair to draw to as Ann would say.

Gordon still made time for fun, joining the curling club, snowmobiling and winter card nights with neighbors and friends. Taking his young family snow skiing was also something everyone enjoyed.
Upon retirement, Gordon and Lorna were able to travel, enjoying warm winter places, and a spectacular caravan to the eastern provinces and Atlantic Canada. A trip to Europe provided a chance to visit some former IAEA “students”.
Gordon’s last few years were spent in Milk River Long Term Care. With Lorna’s regular visits and homemade treats, Gordon knew he was loved until the day he passed. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by his family, whom were all blessed to have the opportunity to see him hold his great-grandson, Weston.

SCHUTTE, Fred “Frederik” SCHUTTE FRED (FREDERIK) SCHUTTE passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. He was 75 years young. The family is deeply saddened by the loss but is consoled that Fred was at home, as was his fervent wish.
Fred is survived and deeply missed by his wife Gayle, his daughter Anne, son-in-law Ivica and sister Jannie in the Netherlands.
His memory lives on with his nieces and nephews: Dot (Dorothy), Jim, Fred and Dave in Lethbridge, Wim (William), Peter, At (Arthur) and Thea in the Netherlands, and his great-nephew, Devon in Lethbridge.
Fred was predeceased by his father Frederik (interred in the Lethbridge Military Field of Honour), his mother Anna and his sisters Rickie (Frederika) and Annie.
Fred was born February 19, 1947 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where, as a young man, his natural intelligence allowed him to easily master the variety of occupations at which he tried his hand. Besides his ease with anything practical, for many years he was the goalie for a semi-professional soccer team in Amsterdam. His love for the ‘beautiful game’ remained with him for life.
On December 24, 1969, he married Canadian girl, Gayle Moncrieff, who became his loving and ever-patient wife of 53 years. After living in the Netherlands for 13 years, Fred, Gayle and Anne immigrated to Canada and settled in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Eventually, Fred turned his many talents to Neudorf Plumbing, where he worked for 17 years until his retirement at age 65. Fred was ever-grateful for the lasting friendships he developed with Rick and Carolee Neudorf and with his colleagues over the years.
For all those who worked with Fred, will know of his deeply ingrained need to bring quality workmanship to the job. He was a true Craftsman who believed that if it wasn’t done well, it was not worth doing; an ethic he was proud to pass on to the numerous younger colleagues he mentored.
Fred loved Canada’s natural beauty, which he took every available opportunity to enjoy. There wasn’t a creature of nature Fred didn’t like, from chatting down a large brown bear who popped by the camp-site to share Fred’s breakfast, to coaxing forest critters to sit on his lap and eat from his hand.
For those privileged to count Fred as a friend, knew they had a friend on whom they could always count. One was rarely in doubt of what Fred thought as he was ever willing to share his opinions. Fred’s foremost quality, for which he was both loved and respected, was that his word was his bond. Fred’s father instilled it in him and, in turn, Fred sought to pay forward that same ethic to those who loved him and worked with him.
There are no words that can express how grateful we are to our family, friends and neighbours who were there on and after the night of Fred’s passing. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the Lethbridge EMT’s for their caring assistance well above their call of duty.
A private family service will take place later this year.

SZILAGYI, Thresea SZILAGYI THRESEA “JOAN” SZILAGYI formerly of Lethbridge, beloved wife of Gyorgy “George” Szilagyi passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Health Centre in Calgary after a brief illness on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at the age of 90 years.
Thresea Joan Walsh was born on December 17th, 1932 at home in Dunboyne, County Meath, Ireland to Martin & Theresa (Healy) Walsh. It was a Saturday.
Joan was the fourth child and first daughter of eleven children. Her father was a sergeant in the Irish Guards, and her family moved several times over her childhood. She spoke fondly of her freedom in those days: “running wild in the hills” with her brothers and her joy of being surrounded by nature. At the age of seventeen, Joan left for nursing school in Yorkshire, England. She subsequently received her midwifery degree and worked in the inner city of Glasgow, which she found very rewarding. Tired of the grey and wet weather, Joan decided to immigrate to Canada with a close friend. They departed on the SS Arcadia, arriving in Montreal on June 9, 1959, and proceeded by train to Alberta.
Joan was awestruck by the Rocky Mountains and decided to settle in Calgary. At the German Canadian Club, where Joan and her friends attended weekly dances, she met George Szilagyi, who had recently immigrated from Hungary. On November 24th, 1962, after a three-month courtship, Joan and George married, honeymooned in Banff, and moved to Lethbridge. They started a family that grew to include four children.
Joan was the foundation of family home life, leaving an indelible, life-long and positive impression on all her children. The love she had for them was palpable; her default mood was cheerful and industrious, fun and warmhearted. By example alone, she taught the importance and power of caring and empathy, and not judging a book by its cover. She modeled strength and resiliency in the face of life’s challenges. Unfailingly polite and hospitable, she had a genuine interest in everybody she met, and showed great generosity of spirit. She loved to laugh, and laughed often, as much at herself as anything. Her children would go to her for encouragement, knowledge and advice. She was always their biggest supporter.
When grandchildren arrived, Joan felt too young to be a “granny” and became “Nagy mama”. She showed each of them the same devotion, always with a quiet word of appreciation, a gentle manner, and undeniable love. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: Adriana, Fiona, Andrew, Elijah, Rain, Grace and Cache.
Joan was a lifelong learner: she sought out new knowledge, experiences and adventures as a matter of course. She loved flowers, birds, gardening, walking, reading, crossword puzzles and sitting outside on the swing. Joan was a great conversationalist and was always ready with a relevant fact or anecdote over a cup of tea. Musical by nature, she was quick with a snippet of a song or a bit of verse as it came to mind and was an enthusiastic member in several church choirs. Joan was a woman of great faith, very active in her church community, and a lifetime member of the CWL. She especially enjoyed time spent working with the sisters at the Martha Retreat Centre. She tirelessly gave her time, energy and efforts to help others wherever there was a need.
After George’s passing last July, Joan moved to Calgary where she received compassionate care from the staff at Scenic Acres Retirement home and most recently at Holy Cross Manor. Although she was having memory issues later in life, she remained her wonderful self, and her family gratefully had her, and she had them, until the end. Her heart took its last beat, and she slipped away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of January 28, 2023. She was ready. It was a Saturday.
Joan is survived by her children: Maria (Gene), James, George Jr (Sharla) and Martina (Jeff) Szilagyi, her siblings: Francis (Irene) Walsh, Maura Pedersen, Peter (Bridget) Walsh, Sal Connellan & Imelda Funk. She was predeceased by siblings: Dorothy Strom, Derek, Bernie, Bob, John and infant Martin Walsh.
Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear. Slán go fóill. (Bye for now)

Hunt, Albert HUNT Naatsikapo’tamissoo – (Two People Coming Over the Mountain) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of ALBERT HUNT. Albert passed away peacefully at St Michael’s Home Care on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend to many.
Albert was born November 9, 1947 on the Blood Reserve. He attended St Paul’s Residential School. After leaving residential school, he began working in numerous establishments. Albert was a Class 1 truck driver, National Salvage welder, security guard, medical transportation driver, mechanic with Marshall’s Auto Wreckers, contractor, a farmer and a rancher. He was a champion Pow-wow singer with Big Corner Post Singers and traditional dancer at many Pow-wows across Canada and USA. Albert and his wife Elizabeth won a trip to Schmitzen Pow-wow where he danced against the world’s best traditional dancers. Albert and Elizabeth were well known for their beadwork and arts and crafts. He also made bull ropes.
Albert enjoyed playing Bingo and visiting with his bingo friends. Another pastime he loved was Rodeos, where he participated in the saddle bronc and steer wrestling events, and was a wild horse racer as well. Albert rode a famous horse named Midnight in saddle bronc. In his younger years, he also enjoyed playing hockey, fastball, and football. Above all, his passion was always hockey. He enjoyed watching his son Calvert play goal, and was an avid fan of the Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders, Stampede Wrestling, NHL hockey, PBR, rodeo, chuckwagons, and football. His booming voice could be heard throughout the hockey arenas. So much so that his sons felt embarrassed at how loud he was. Albert was known for his contagious laughter and sense of humour. He loved to tease and joke, even laughing at his own jokes. Albert was with his wife Elizabeth for 47 years. They married in 1997 (25 years). Together they had three boys and 11 grandchildren. They also have numerous traditional adopted children and grandchildren.
Albert was a very loving and caring man. He would support his sons in their activities; Darren with his football, Andy with his singing and Calvert in hockey and Pow-wows. His sons followed their dad’s footsteps into the Pow-wow circle with their singing and dancing. He always loved having his grandchildren around as they brought him much joy.
Albert was a very dedicated society member of the Brave Dogs and Horn societies. He was also a singer for Siksika Horn Society. Elizabeth and Albert were the oldest Brave Dog members (since the 1970’s) and had a very strong spiritual connection and followed the traditional ways of life.
Albert is survived by his wife of 47 years Elizabeth, his sons: Darren, Andy, Calvert (Joni); grandchildren: Hillary, Savannah, Ryan, Kailie, Larissa, Canyon, Calvert Jr, Cyler, Ocean, Guy and Wyatt; adopted children: Gaylene Eagle Speaker, Cecilia Eagle Speaker, Jade McHugh, Michelle
