The YWCA Lethbridge and District is celebrating women in the community who have made exemplary achievements in their fields through Women of Distinction Awards tonight at the Coast Hotel.

YWCA Lethbridge and District CEO, Jill Young said it is incredibly exciting but also incredibly humbling to be able to deliver awards to so many accomplished women throughout our community.

“Not only that, but I am able to bring a community together, to be able to recognize all of these women at the same time, so it’s incredibly amazing,” said Young.

She said it was important to pair it with International Women’s Day because the YWCA is all about the empowerment of women and creating a safe space for everybody.

“We recognize all individuals that are recognized as either she or her or just in general identify as a female, and so we want to make sure that everybody is included. We’re all about diversity and inclusion and everyone is accepted at this table,” said Young.

The awards will be giving out to six women,in a variety of categories From Truth and Reconciliation, to Arts, Culture and Heritage, to Entrepreneurship and Innovation, to Young Woman of Promise among others.

“A lot of these women were nominated through their peers, their families or people that are aware of all the wonderful things they’ve done in the community,” said Catherine Champagne, YWCA Lethbridge and District external relations director.
