Hurricanes come back to beat Pats in OT thriller

The Regina Pats and Lethbridge Hurricanes played to overtime, with  the Canes’ Logan McCutcheon scoring the winner off  a missed chance by Regina’s Connor Bedard at the other end.

The Hurricanes won 5-4.

Bedard opened the scoring with his 61st goal of the season on the powerplay from former Hurricane and Lethbridge product Zack Stringer at 3:50 of the first period.

Jett Jones replied for the Hurricanes as he jammed the puck in the net on the powerplay at 9:24 on of the first period to tie the game 1-1.

Tanner Howe gave the Pats a 2-1 lead on the powerplay, as he lifted the puck over Canes goalie Bryan Thomson at 11:11 of the first period.

The Pats would extend their lead to 3-1 in the first period, courtesy of Braxton Whitehead’s ninth goal of the season at 16:44 of the first period.

Miguel Marques would bring the Hurricanes to within a goal at 3:27 of second period after he chipped  the puck past Pats goalie Drew Sim.

The Canes Tyson Zimmer caught a lucky break as his shot redirected off a Pats defender into the net to tie the game 3-3 at 13:26 of the second period.

The Pats’ Tye Spencer made the score 4-3 Regina at 18:32 of the second period, as he drove the lane and chipped the puck past Thomson.

Spencer’s marker was the Pats third powerplay goal of the game.

Canes defenceman Joe Arntsen capitalized on a rebound and tied the game at four with his 10th of the season at 17:38 of the third period.

Bedard came close to winning the game for the Pats in overtime, but hit the post.

It was shortly after that Canes took the puck down the ice on a 2-on-1 and McCutcheon found the back of the net to win the game. 

The Canes pull within five points of Moose Jaw after the win for fourth place.

Lethbridge scored once on the powerplay, while the Pats converted three times on the man advantage.

Shots were 39-26 for Lethbridge.

The Hurricanes will be back in action on Wednesday on the road against the Calgary Hitmen at 7 p.m.
