Hurricanes thrash St. Albert

The Lethbridge Hurricanes U13AA team started the Provincial Championship with a 10-3 win over St. Albert Stars  on Thursday afternoon in Olds.

The Canes scored four goals in the first off the sticks of Liam Cowie, Jake Gerstenbuhler, Wyatt Watson and Keagan Grant.

St. Albert’s Jayden Halabi scored his team’slone goal in the first.

Halabi scored a powerplay goal 1:44 into the second period to cut the Canes leave in half.

Kayden Plewes brought St. Albert to within a goal later in the period to make the score 4-3 heading into third.

Lethbridge opened the flood gates in the third as Cowie and Grant each scored twice to complete their hat tricks, while Gerstenbuhler scored his second of the contest and Easton Mattersdorfer supplied a single to round out the scoring.

Chase Nielson stopped 22-of-25 shots in the win.

The U13AAs will play Calgary’s NWCAA Stamps today at 9 a.m. and a rematch of the league final with the Olds Grizzlys this afternoon at 5:45 p.m.
