LCI Rams football player Greyson Rieder will don his school’s colours one last time at the Senior Bowl High School All-Star Game next month.
The Senior Bowl plucks the best Grade 12 players in the province for the All-Star Game to represent a north and south team after selection camps are completed.
Rieder is the lone LCI representative on the Senior Bowl south roster after the final roster of 40 Grade 12 graduating players was announced last week.
“Honestly, I was pretty excited,” said Rieder.
“I had a lot of high hopes but it was more of a last-ditch decision to go in, just because money was kind of tight and we just said, why not finish it off with a fun last thing to do.”
Rieder was the only Ram at the selection camp in Calgary earlier this month.
Rieder thought the camp was fun.
“It was pretty good competition there,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to playing the North again because they usually have some good players down there that give pretty good competition.”
Rieder said it’s more of a mental preparation, when it comes to the focus before the event
“You’ve got make sure your head’s in the right space and work out (and) just get ready, “ he said.
“(And) work on some foot work and they (the team) give you the plays. So just run the plays and make sure you know them back to front.”
The 2022 season was Rieder’s only campaign with the Rams after coming over from Chestermere.
“Honestly, it was a pretty nice change,” he said.
“I don’t know, it just felt a lot better coming down here because I felt like there was a lot more competition, it was a lot more challenging (and) the coaches had a lot more drive in them.”
The transition helped his football career a lot.
“Coach (Darren) Majeran taught me a lot for offensive line and helped me improve a lot more,” he said.
Rieder signed a Letter of Intent to play at the University of Calgary next season and will enroll in Political Science with the plan to work into Kinesiology.
“I mean truthfully, not surprised,” said Rams head coach Patrick Leahy.
“Greyson’s got a scholarship and you know he’s a previous Team Alberta player and all along we’ve known that he’s a tremendous football talent and with his size and ability, I’m not shocked by any stretch that he made the team. Obviously, there’s great competition and some really good kids go up every year … and it’s a pretty prestigious kind of game as far as Alberta is concerned.”
The 33rd annual Senior Bowl between Team North and Team South goes May 22 in Lacombe.
