The Lethbridge Football Club women’s team has entered the second half of its Alberta Major Soccer League season on a high note.

That high note was a 3-2 win over Edmonton Green and Gold on Saturday, in what was their first win of the season and something this young squad hopes to build off of for their remaining games.

“Yeah, I mean it feels good to win,” said LFC coach Michael Racz.

“Like it’s nice, you know, the work that we’ve been putting in, to have it pay off in a result. Like again, the focus is still on kind of getting these girls ready for whatever they’ve got coming next. I know that’s not the same for all of them, like if they’re not going on playing college soccer then it’s not quite as important to them. I think we’ve been growing as a team. I think that there’s  a good atmosphere within the group of players… I think it was just kind of  a matter of  time and kind of we found our opponent that kind of matched up well with us. So that was what kind of allowed us to capitalize on some of those mistakes.”

LFC (1-7) faces the Edmonton teams once and the Calgary teams three times in the schedule.

“I’m hoping (with)  some of the Calgary teams ,(and) that one last kind of shot at them, that we’ll be motivated for those games because we want to kind of show that the results that they got against us weren’t necessarily indicative of how we were playing,” said Racz, on how they plan to build off the win heading into the second half.

“And then we’ve got two Edmonton teams coming down at the end of our season that we haven’t really had any exposure to yet. So they’ve got to travel this time and I think that always kind of adds a little bit of extra pressure. So it’ll be nice to have that pressure be on the other team and give us a chance to try and expose some of those weaknesses. Yeah, there’s some opportunities for us to get some results. I think we just have to make sure that we’re reducing those mistakes that we’ve been making in the first half of the season.”

LFC ended the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Edmonton Angels Scottish FC on Sunday.

Racz reflected on the first half of the season after LFC started the season with a record of 0-6.

“I think it’s definitely been a learning process for our team,” said Racz.

“We’re pretty young still, like we’ve got a lot of players that are going into their college (and) university seasons for the first time. There’s some players that we absorbed from a U17 team, so we’re pretty young to start with. So there’s kind of a learning experience for our time because we’re playing against some teams that have, you know, fourth and fifth year university players on there. We do have a couple more experienced players and they’re definitely helping you know show the younger players kind of what’s needed for this league.”

LFC saw a lot of mistakes in the first half that they’re trying to minimalize.

“It’s a league where we get punished for little mistakes,” said Racz.

“And I think from the beginning, we’ve had games where we’ve played not bad, but those little, tiny mistakes have cost us and we’re not able to capitalize on those same mistakes on the other end. I think we’re starting to cut those little mistakes out. We still have a little bit of an issue ,especially in the first half, trying  to get ourselves motivated to start the game and then to finish that first half.  We’ve allowed some goals that you know we’ve talked about trying to stop that from happening (with) just allowing goals at the end of the first half.”

Lethbridge will be back in action when they host Calgary SWU on July 8 at Servus Sports Centre outdoor field.
