When Sheena Lawson and company perform at Waterton United Church, she’ll feel the presence of her late father Alex near here.
Lawson, a long-time United Church pastor, often preached in Waterton and a photo of him is on the wall beside the stage where Sunday’s concert will be staged.
Lawson is part of the group The LoveCats, which also consists of Randy Paskuski on bass, Sophie Sheets on guitar and Neil Sheets on drums.
Their performance is part of the Waterton United Concert Series. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for student/child and $25 for family.
Growing up in a musical family, Sheena and her dad would often sing together while the family travelled from their home in Saskatchewan west or east in an old woody station wagon.
While she and her dad – a bagpiper – seldom performed publicly often together, Lawson said playing on a stage for the first time with that photo nearby “was really weird.”
She and the band are all well-known in the local music scene and regularly played with Herb Hicks until he retired from public performances.
She calls the Waterton church – located at Clematis Avenue – “the best place to play,” adding it’s “acoustically amazing.”
In their set, the LoveCats will be playing a wide range of songs from the 1970s and ’80s with newer ones thrown in such as “All About the Bass.”
Their repertoire also has tunes ranging from “Ode to Billy Joe” to “Chuck E.s’ in Love” to the Beatles “Come Together.”
