APPELT, Jim

JIM APPELT 1954-2023 Jim Appelt, of Lethbridge, beloved father of Tonia Appelt (Russ) and Jennifer Appelt, grandfather to Elizabeth and former spouse and friend of Sharon Appelt, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on September 24, 2023. He passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care surrounded by family at the age of 69. He was blessed to share visits and laughter with those he loved in the weeks before his passing.
He loved his cars, his hockey, his music, and his family. He grew up in Lethbridge with a short time schooling in Edmonton at Concordia where he met his best and lifelong friend Bill. They made many years of memories on fishing trips. Jim ran a successful Painting and Decorating Business for many years. He spent many summers in the Kananaskis with Sharon and the girls, where he fished at his special spot every morning. He had the biggest smiles when his granddaughter was around. He enjoyed spending time with Paul on the Sunshine Coast, and Pat and Rob and family in the Okanagan. He loved watching the Hurricane games with his friend Andy and other hockey buddies. He loved to travel. He backpacked with his daughter through Australia, visited Japan 3 times, Britain, Hawaii, Mexico and many parts of Canada.
He was predeceased by his parents Kay and Theo Appelt.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of The Alberta Rose Lodge for making it home the last few years. We’re grateful for the other Angels who helped watch over him. We’d also like to thank the Palliative Care team at St. Michaels for their compassionate care and kindness.

RICHARDS, Vivian “Jean”

VIVIAN “JEAN” RICHARDS 1930 – 2023 Mrs. Vivian “Jean” Richards of Lethbridge, beloved wife of Mr. Norman Richards, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the age of 93 years.
Jean was born on May 13, 1930, in Saskatoon, the eldest of ten children to Fred and Gwen (Faber) Schuler. She received limited education at a rural school in Lake Four, Saskatchewan. She stayed home at an early age to help her parents look after her siblings and also worked on the farm. These responsibilities increased when her father went overseas during WWII. Her siblings said that Jean “worked like a man” during that time. She knew the value of hard work and it never left her.
Jean migrated to Alberta in the early 1950’s and found work as a cook in the Vulcan Hospital. Some of her family moved to the area as well. On July 11, 1964, Jean married Norman Richards and they lived briefly in Picture Butte and Lethbridge before returning to Vulcan. They moved back to Lethbridge in 1972.
Jean was known for her cooking, tending to her garden as well as embroidery and cross stitch. She and Norman did several cross-country trips, looking for antiques and vintage car parts over the years. Both Jean and Norman had a passion for Chihuahua dogs, raising several over the years. They always had one or two of them who let them know when visitors came around to the house.
Jean was a “special Aunt” to all of her nieces and nephews and was loved by all of them. For the last five years, Jean resided at Edith Cavell Care Centre until she was admitted to the Chinook Regional Hospital.
The family wishes to thank those certain staff at Edith Cavell who gave her excellent care, the hospital staff on 4B, and the physicians from the Family Medical Centre.
Besides her loving husband Norman, Jean is survived by her brothers Robert (Merelyn) Schuler of Cranbrook B.C and Richard (Brenda) Schuler of Vulcan, Alberta; sisters in law Isobel Schuler of Lethbridge, Connie Schuler of Kimberley B.C and Marilyn Richards of Coaldale AB.
She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Gwen Schuler; Normans parents Frank and Evelyn Richards; sisters Hazel Carlson, Grace Doucette, Irene Tardiff, Dora Schuler and Nancy Schuler; brothers Clifford and Dennis Schuler; brothers in law Dennis Carlson, Leo Tardiff, Albert Doucette and Edward Richards.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am, on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Lisa Shimozawa, officiating. MCKILLOP, Lois

LOIS MCKILLOP 1923 – 2023 “A Life Well Lived” Mrs. Lois Dumont McKillop of Lethbridge passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, September 25, 2023, at the age of 100 years.
Mom was born in Calgary on May 13, 1923. She lived an exemplary life of 100 years.
She is survived by her sister Joan Ripley of Bellville, Ontario; three sons Bruce (Bonnie Court-Earl), Charles (Bev), Laird (Janet); seven grandchildren Sonya (Ryan Reidel), Marcella (Ryan Van Marle), Marina (Travis Christman), David, Kevin, Lyndsey (Sean Simpson) and Sarah; as well as six great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Charles “Bud” McKillop in May 1995.
After graduating high school in Drumheller, mom entered nursing school at the Calgary General Hospital. Shortly after graduation in 1947, she moved to Lethbridge where she met our father “a real gentleman and a fabulous dancer.” Mother worked at the Galt Hospital before becoming mother to three rambunctious boys. When Laird was settled into school, she returned to her nursing career and worked at the new Lethbridge Municipal Hospital. She eventually worked her way up to head nurse of pediatrics and ran a “tight ship” until her retirement.
Mom and dad travelled and enjoyed watching their three boys advance in their careers and growing the next generation. While Dad continued to work, Mom traveled to the old Soviet Union, Revolutionary China, Mongolia, Australia, Africa and Europe; Mom traveled to destinations that tend to be off the beaten path of conventional tourism.
When Mom was not travelling or keeping a watchful eye on her three boys, she volunteered at; the Helen Schuler Nature Center, Meals on Wheels, Eastern Star of the Masonic Order (Worthy Matron), Lethbridge Historical Society. Above all, mom enjoyed a deep passion for bird watching with the Bird Watchers of North America.
Mother moved to Black Rock Seniors Lodge following the passing of Bud. She enjoyed the care, friendly staff, old acquaintances and making new friends.
A Funeral Service at 11:00 am, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411, 11 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Gillian Breckenridge, officiating.
Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

HALES, Thomas P.P. “PaPa”

HALES THOMAS P.P. HALES, “PaPa”, was called home by Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.
Left to carry on his legacy of family is the love of his life, Linda Hales and the greatest joy of his life, his daughter, Shelley Hales Payne “Charlie”. He will be deeply missed, but always admired by his beloved grandson Ryan Payne (Samantha) and granddaughter Lyndsay MacKay (Matthew). He is also survived by his four great-grandchildren: Max, Ollie, Ben and Will, who will carry on his lasting desire for learning, life and love.
He was predeceased by his precious daughter Patricia Hales.
Although a true innovator and designer many years ahead of his time, his greatest accomplished passion was always his beloved family. For a lifetime, he was an inspiration to his family and shared his love and prized possessions with those around him; his spirit of giving, both possessions and unending wisdom and love will be forever remembered.
Our PaPa was dedicated to his family and was always there to support his family in any way possible, while most happy spending time with Linda, Shelley, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We love you PaPa and will see you again very soon.

NEUFELD, Herman

NEUFELD HERMAN HENRY NEUFELD, of Lethbridge, beloved father and Opa, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at the age of 78 years.
Herman is survived by his children: Tim (Jodie), Trevor (Anna) and Terry; and grandkids: Teagan, Rylen, Trystyn, Taylor, Trayce and Tawnee. He is also survived by his brother Peter (Heather) and family; sister Lena (Randy) and family; and sister-in-law Shirley and family.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Henry.
Herman was born on November 3rd, 1944 in Bieletz, Poland to Henry and Helene Neufeld. In 1947, the family immigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Coaldale in 1950, where Herman was raised and lived for most of his life. Even after moving to Lethbridge, he was in Coaldale almost every day.
During the 70’s, Herman had a water-hauling business and started T.J. Coffee Services, which he ran until his passing. During the early 2000’s, he worked as a realtor with Sel-Rite Realty.
Family was everything to Herman and he enjoyed spending time with his kids and their extended families. He loved nothing more than watching his boys and grandkids play sports. He attended every hockey, baseball, volleyball, and basketball game. He would even make his way into practices. If he could not make it to a game or practice, he would often call and apologize for not being there.
In his later years, Herman became a very popular member of a few groups of avid coffee drinkers at local cafes. He also loved his breakfasts at the Nord-Bridge Senior Centre a few times a week.
During his life, he was well known for playing the accordion and “jammed” with numerous groups over the years. He always said the bathroom had the best acoustics. Growing up, the boys remember bath-time often being accompanied by dad playing the accordion.
A Celebration of Herman’s Life will be held at COALDALE MENNONITE CHURCH, 2316 – 17 Street, Coaldale, AB, on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Eric Giesbrecht officiating.

Plain Eagle, Richard “Naatosiyinniipii” Brings Down The Sun Alfred Richard Plain Eagle of Piikani Nation, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, AB on September 26, 2023, at the age of 64 years. A prayer service will be held at Snodgrass Funeral Home, Pincher Creek on Sunday, October 1 at 10:00am with a One-Day Wake Service to follow at the home of Noreen Plain Eagle. The Funeral Service will be held at the Piikani Nation Community Hall on Monday October 2, at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Piikani Nation Cemetery.
The family extends their gratitude to the nurses and Dr. Tracey Burton at the Pincher Creek Health Care Centre, as well as to the nurses at the ICU unit at the Chinook Regional Hospital.
