Wormald scores OT winner to lift Canes to victory

Logan Wormald scored 25 seconds into overtime to lift the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre.

“ Well obviously, we stepped up and made a play in overtime,” said Bill Peters, Hurricanes head coach.

“We had some looks early in the game. I thought we could have extended a lead ,(and) lots of good, quality looks and they kind of went away as the game went along. But lost the speciality team game, right and we had lots of opportunity on the powerplay. The  powerplay needs to be better. We’re well aware of that and we’ll continue to work at it.”

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Canes.

“Yeah, no, it was unbelievable,” said Miguel Marques.

“We were on obviously like you said, a three game losing streak but the boys rallied today. We stuck to our systems, played  our game and it turned out well.”

Marques thought the team was snake-bitten during the road trip as they couldn’t score as much five-on-five.

“And today we ran into another hot goaltender,” he said.

“But we just  stuck with our game ,and  kept playing the way we did and obviously it turned out the way we needed it to.”

The Hurricanes got the scoring going on this night as defencemen Noah Chadwick walked in from the left point and his wrist shot found the back of the net past Hitmen goaltender Ethan Buenaventura just 5:48 into the first period.

Joe Arntsen and Brayden Edwards assisted on Chadwick’s third goal of the season.

The Hitmen tied the game courtesy of Ethan Moore’s unassisted third goal of the year at 17:13 of the first period.

Marques found the puck on the doorstep and deposited his fourth goal of the season at 15:44 of the second period to give the Canes a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

Logan McCutcheon and Landen Ward drew the assists on the goal.

Tyson Greenway scored his first of the season  on the powerplay at 11:06 of the third period to tie the game 2-2.

Carter Yakemchuk and Sean Tschigerl got the assist on the marker.

The Hurricanes went 0-for-5 while Calgary went 1-for-4 on the powerplay.

The Canes will be back in action when they host the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night at the Enmax Centre.
