THOM, Marvin MARVIN THOM 1941 – 2023 Mr. Marvin Peter Thom of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Barbara Thom, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, October 9, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
Marv was born in Lethbridge on March 9, 1941, to parents George and Leona Thom.
My darling Marv, how we will miss you. Just short of 64 years you decide to take a break. You always played hard and worked very hard. No one could come close to you. Teaching the fellows the proper way to butcher. Also teaching boxing at times and refereeing. You loved gardening, fishing and camping. Later, you went back to work driving crew bus for Hallcon and CPR for 15 years. And then the sickness came.
Marv leaves behind his wife Barbara; sons Curtis (Bev), Randy (Marcy), Derek (Terri); daughter Cheryl (Joe); brother Terry; sister Doreen; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son Stacy.
Marv with be remembered privately by his family and his friends.

COATHAM, Dorothy COATHAM, DOROTHY MAY It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dorothy May Coatham (Petersen) on October 16th, 2023 at the age of 65 years.
Dorothy will be remembered as the devoted Wife of Ted Coatham and loving Mother of Mackenzie (Harland) Brandon of Edmonton. She was predeceased by her parents: Jack and Edna Petersen; in-laws: Bob and Janet Coatham; brother Ed Petersen, sister Lorna Finkbeiner (Petersen) and her baby infant daughter. Dorothy will be remembered fondly by her three brothers and their wives, her two sisters-in-law and their husbands, her many nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and countless friends.
Dorothy was born on May 9th, 1958 in Coronation, Alberta. In 1976, she moved to Edmonton, Alberta to attend the University of Alberta and NAIT. While in Edmonton she met Ted, who she married on May 5, 1979. Dorothy went on to live in several other Alberta communities including Camrose, Cardston, and finally Lethbridge. Her hard work and attentiveness will be missed by the many who utilized her bookkeeping services over the last 30 years. She will be remembered fondly by many for her love of all sports as both an avid participant and fan. Dorothy’s interests in relation to genealogy, history, literature, gardening, and fashion, in addition to her prowess at all types of crafting, will be missed immensely by those closest to her.
Thank you to all the staff at the St. Michael’s Health Centre for their care. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in Dorothy’s name to the St. Michael’s Health Centre. At a time in the future, a gathering to honor Dorothy’s life is planned in order to honor the wonderful person that she was.

SULLIVAN, Violet “Vi” SULLIVAN October 31, 1926 – October 14, 2023 VIOLET “VI” PEARL SULLIVAN, 96, our beloved mother and grandmother woke up in eternity on Saturday, October 14th, 2023. She slipped away quietly and peacefully during the night in her bed. A bed she had slept in since the early days of her marriage. In her room, in a place she didn’t want to leave. This is how she wanted to pass from this life to the next and we are so thankful her prayers were answered.
We as a family are of course saddened by the suddenness of this, but we are also so thankful. We will miss her something fierce.
Violet was the beloved wife of the late Daniel Wilfred Sullivan. She is the loving mother of Kim (Dianne) Sullivan, Phil (Shelley) Sullivan, Dawn Sullivan, Shannon (Hoyt) Seitz, Chris adopted daughter; her grandchildren: DeAndra, Hunter, KiAnna, Mackenzie, Kyle, and Louisa.
Violet was born October 31, 1926, in High River, Alberta. Growing up Violet lived in many communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. She completed her Grade Twelve from Portreeve School in 1945. A typing teacher there gave Vi a very sound foundation to touch typing, which was a skill that mom developed to perfection. Her ambition from an early age was to become a teacher and she achieved this ambition, graduating from the Moose Jaw Teacher Training program in 1950.
She began her teaching career with the Regina Public School Board that year to a Grade Six class of 39 students, 19 of which she always described as “streetwise active boys”. In June 1954, Violet accepted a position at the Granum School and returned home to live there with her parents as her dad was the CPR Agent. In September 1957, she transferred to Claresholm to teach grade 7. It was there that she met her husband Daniel “Wilfred” who was the vice-principal of the Claresholm High School. Violet and Wilf were married June 30th, 1958, at St. Benedicts, the same church her parents were wed.
The following year was spent in Missoula as Wilf completed his Master’s in June 1959 from the University of Montana. After Wilf accepted the principalship of Granum Schools, they began their family of four. Violet taught Home Economics and Remedial Reading. Fashion shows were a common appearance. Vi was a master seamstress, making clothes and costumes and then branching out into quilting. She could just look at something and then create it. Many students baked their first pies with Violet. In 1973, both Wilf and Violet accepted teaching positions in Fort Macleod. Violet was a resource room teacher at GR Davis School, remaining in this role until retiring in June of 1992. Mother was very proud of the fact that she taught three generations of one family! She taught the students the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. The pie making continued in Fort Macleod as grade six students baked their first pie to be consumed on their campout at the river bottom.
Family life was busy for Violet and Wilf as their children became involved in many activities, supporting them in all their endeavors. The summers involved the swimming pool, Summer Games and baseball/softball; the falls involved basketball and volleyball and the winters involved hockey. Throughout the year the family delivered both the Lethbridge and Calgary Heralds. Family vacations had the Sullivan’s traveling to Kootenay Lake, Whitefish Lake, and cherry picking in Creston. Fairmont Hot Springs was another favorite spot. Picnics were common in the Porcupine Hills, Waterton and Glacier National Park, pie and Christmas cake were often served. The station wagon was expertly packed with all necessities, we still often wonder how she managed to make everything fit. Violet was an amazing homesteader from canning fruit, jams, and jellies to canning meat. Gathering and preserving occurred whenever the opportunities presented themselves; from the ditches with horseradish, to the blackberry bushes, to the bogs with cranberries, she did it all. She demonstrated the art of using and reusing resources you already have for new purposes and enjoyment, particularly masking tape and wrapping paper!
She taught us all many things but one thing we all witnessed was her role as a caregiver. Whether it was for her in-laws and her own parents, and finally her beloved husband Wilfred. Violet’s family is very thankful and grateful for the wonderful care and compassion from the staff at the View and her health care aides, both of which have supported her since the fall of 2009.
Violet has left a legacy in her children, her daughters-in-law, her son-in-law, her adopted daughter, and her six grandchildren. We all knew how much she loved us and was so delighted and proud of our accomplishments.
Until we meet again, we love you Mother/Mom, Mom-in-law, and Grandma.
A Celebration of Violet’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. with Hoyt Seitz officiating.

REMPEL, Peter REMPEL January 6, 1923 – October 15, 2023 PETER REMPEL, of Coaldale, AB, beloved husband of the late Mary Rempel of 67 years, passed away peacefully in the presence of Jesus at Sunny South Lodge, on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at the age of 100 years.
Peter is lovingly remembered by his five children: Ria (Ken Frances) Neufeld, David (Kerry) Rempel, Wilma (Rick) Enns, Irene Rempel, and Vivien (Phil) Sharp and their families. He had 17 grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Marie (Cliff) Hamm and family; sister Martha Retzlaff and family; and sister-in-law Harriet as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Peter was born to Jacob and Annie Rempel in Didsbury, Alberta, on January 6, 1923. He was the oldest of five children and was predeceased by two infant siblings; his parents; and his brothers Frank (Laura) and Bill; brother-in-law Art; and son-in-law Tom.
Peter grew up in the Didsbury/Cremona area. In 1938, his family moved to Rosemary to farm. On April 29, 1953, Peter married Mary Neufeld. They farmed together until 1972. Pete worked for Lakeside Feeders, then at the Co-op as yardman, and later, a fuel truck driver. Following retirement, Peter often worked for farmers during harvest.
Peter loved God, his family, nature and farm life. While a quiet man, Pete’s faith was very important to him. Even in his deep dementia, Pete would tell others that he loved God and that God loved him. Rosemary Mennonite Church was very important to him. He served on various committees, including the education committee, taught German Sunday School, and was a faithful member in the men’s choir for many years. Pete had a wonderful bass voice and loved to sing until several years ago.
Peter and Mary moved to Coaldale in July of 2011, and a year and a half later, moved into Sunny South Lodge, where he faithfully attended the church services and other forms of entertainment as long as he was able to.
A special thank you to the staff in the dementia unit of Sunny South Lodge for your care and compassion these last few years. Your love for our dad was heart-warming and your care for him was exceptional. Thank you also to Dr. Justin Steed for your compassionate care these last years. Our family would also like to thank all who came to visit with Dad and who helped make Coaldale home for him. Dad appreciated each visit.
A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date for both Peter and Mary in Rosemary.

HARROWING, Ruth RUTH MARY HARROWING (neé HILL) 20 July 1934 – 19 October 2023 Ruth died peacefully in her 90th year following complications from a heart medication. She was the eldest of three children born to Rowland and Ellen Hill in Verdun, QC where she spent her childhood. She earned her teaching certificate at Macdonald College and a baccalaureate degree at Sir George Williams University. She married Colin Harrowing in April 1956 and together they raised three children: Jean, Douglas (Lois) and Gordon (Lorelei). The family’s adventures took them to Chateauguay and Howick, QC and then to Alberta, where they lived in High River, Winfield, and finally, Lethbridge. Ruth worked as a school teacher and later earned a living as a dairy farmer and potter. She was an amazing athlete in her youth, became a skilled gardener and artist, and was always a supportive and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a fierce advocate for social justice and human rights, and was a loyal fan of the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Blue Jays.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her beloved Colin (2018), and her brother-in-law Stew and sister-in-law Dorothy. She is survived by her children, 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, her sister Lynda (Bob) and brother Ken (Carole), several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at the PARKBRIDGE ESTATES COMMUNITY HALL – 2928 29 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Erin Phillips officiating.
