The members of the Turin 4-H Club want to help those who need it and on Friday they made a massive donation to the Jack Ady Cancer Centre at Chinook Regional Hospital.

About 40 in number, the members of the 4-H sheep club donated $53,000 to the centre in memory of two people.

The members raised a sheep for auction and at the auction it was donated time and again to be re-auctioned so more money could be raised.

And members of the club who come from areas of Lethbridge county including Turin, Picture Butte and Nobleford donated the bulk of proceeds to the cancer centre.

They also donated 10 per cent of the auction proceeds to the Humane Society with the other 10 per cent going to support free swimming and skating in Picture Butte.

Dr. Andrea Haner of the hospital said money donated to the centre can go towards patient supports or to help fund new resources for the centre.

“Funding that comes in stays in the community and it helps our patients,” said Haner.

She said a donation of this size “is really impressive, especially for a group of children. This is amazing. I don’t think we would have expected this.”

The daughters of one of those patients, Marlene Stroeve, were on hand for the cheque presentation.

Angie Vanzeggelaar and Tanya Slomp said the money was donated in the memory of their mom and another individual named Craig Sosick.

Vanzeggelaar said the Turin 4-H club and raises lots of money and does plenty of activities.

One family raised a lamb to be auctioned off for charity in memory of Stroeve and Sosick, said Vanzeggelaar.

Club members decided the charities to donate to with 80 per cent going to the cancer centre which offers a wide range of services within CRH.
