The Saskatoon Blades came in and spoiled the Toque and Teddy Toss game for the Lethbridge Hurricanes with a 3-1 win on Friday night at the Enmax Centre.
The Blades silenced the sold-out crowd momentarily early in the second period as Easton Armstrong opened the scoring just 46 seconds into the middle frame.
Egor Sidorov and Trevor Wong notched the assists.
A packed Enmax Centre was on pins and needles through just over a period and a half before the Hurricanes’ Miguel Marques scored the Toque and Teddy Toss goal with 7:02 left in the second period.
Fans then tossed their stuffed bears and toques on the ice.
“Obviously it’s super special growing up watching these types of hockey games and getting the goal tonight ,” said Marques.
“It’s obviously for a good cause and stuff. So it feels pretty cool.”
Marques initially did not see the puck go in as he thought defenceman Will Sharpe might have tapped it in.
“So I had a little bit of a late celebration,” said Marques.
Sharpe and Tyson Zimmer assisted on Marques 10th goal of the season.
Saskatoon regained the lead 2:05 into the third period on Sidorov’s 25th goal of the season from Wong.
Brandon Lisowsky iced it for the Blades with an empty net goal with four seconds to go in the game.
The bears will now be distributed to 20 different charities in the city and area.
Final shots were 33-28 in favour of the Blades.
Both teams did not score on their powerplays.
The Hurricanes (14-11-2) will look to get back on track when they host Swift Current Broncos next Friday night.
