The Lethbridge Hurricanes snapped a five-game losing streak after 2-1 shootout win over  the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night at the Enmax Centre.

Logan McCutcheon scored the shootout winner in the seventh round to preserve the win for the Canes.

“Oh, gutsy effort,” said Matt Anholt, Hurricanes assistant coach to Dustin Forbes of 106.7 Rock

“I mean they’re a really sound defensive hard team that has a lot of guys that know how to win and we had to respond with that exact effort and I think we did.  I think all the way through our line up, we had a lot of guys that just maybe  didn’t play super sexy but they play hard and they played simple and they played smart.”

Kooper Gizowski’s shot found its way to the back of the net  for his 14th goal of the season to give the Hurricanes the 1-0 lead at the 15:39 mark of the opening period.

Tristen Doyle and Blake Swetlikoff assisted on the goal.

The Rebels’ Kalan Lind tied the game with 5:46 left in regulation from Ollie Josephson and Elias Carmichael.

Harrison Meneghin returned to the crease for the first time since Dec.8  after dealing with an injury and stopped 33-of-34 shots and five of seven shots in the shootout.

“So I mean when you have that guy back there, and  he’s just so confident and makes your team so confident,” said Anholt.

“And he’s sound and he’s quiet. It’s easy to play in front of.”

Miguel Marques and Tyson Zimmer also scored in the shootout for the Canes.

The Canes fired 30 shots at the Rebels net.

Lethbridge (16-15-3-0) will end 2023 with a road game at the Medicine Hat Tigers tonight.
