Canes double up the Broncos

The Lethbridge Hurricanes avenged a loss to the Swift Current Broncos a week ago with a 6-3  win on Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre.

“I liked our second period even though we came out of it down one,” said Bill Peters, Hurricanes head coach.

“The guys knew they were playing well and stayed with it and responded obviously. The speciality teams were good and good performance and production on the powerplay.”

Clarke Caswell scored his 10th of the season at the 6:38 mark of the middle frame to open the scoring  and gave the Broncos the 1-0 lead.

Luke Mistelbacher and Owen Pickering notched the assists.

Tyson Zimmer replied for the Canes with his 11th of the season at 10:18 of the second period.

Trae Wilke and Carter Dereniwsky both assisted on the Zimmer marker.

Connor Gabriel slid the puck into an open net to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead at 15:38 of the second period.

Caswell and Mistelbacher assisted on the goal.

Brayden Edwards redirected a pass into the net for his 16th of the season on the powerplay at 4:53 of the third to tie the game 2-2.

Noah Chadwick  and Logan Wormald assisted on the goal.

The Canes would capitalize on the powerplay again as Wormald found the back of the net at the 10:16 mark of the third.

Chadwick and Edwards had the assists.

“Yeah (the) games on the line and they wanted to step up and they’ve done a good job here coming out of the break,” said Peters, on the top players of Edwards and Wormald’s performance.

Zimmer scored his second of the night and the team’s third powerplay goal of the night at 13:35 of the third to give the Canes a 4-2 lead.

Chadwick and Marques got the assists.

Elias Knoester made the score 5-2 Canes with is fifth of the season at 16:38 of the third from Wilke and Logan McCutcheon.

Connor Hvidston scored his 1 th of the season with 2:18 left in the contest to cut the Canes lead to 5-3.

Edwards sealed it with an empty netter with 1:25 to go in the game.

“We’re a good team too,” said Zimmer.

“ And We believe it in here, our coaches believe it. So as long as we stick to that,  we can hopefully play with any team in this league, as long as we bring our ‘A’ game every night.”

The Canes (18-15-3-0) host the Tri-City Americans Friday night.
