The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team will be in for a battle in terms of where they will finish in the standings as they prepare for their last two regular season games this weekend.
The Kodiaks have a 12-7 record and are tied with Briercrest and Red Deer Polytechnic for third place.
“Battling for seeding this late is a good thing,” said coach Ryan Heggie.
“Every game matters big time. That’s why our league is awesome. It’s extremely competitive (in) every game all season.”
While the Kodiaks will look to move the standings, they will host Concordia and the Kings University tonight and Saturday night respectively at 8 p.m.
“Concordia is a deep team with several players that can put up 20 plus points on any night. They are a well-coached team, who is good on both sides of the ball, and also playing for playoff seeding,” said Heggie.
“King’s is a young team that has had several really close games this season. They added a seven (foot player) at the break who (will) match up well with (Declan) Peterson.
Heggie would like to see discipline on both sides of the ball this weekend.
“Playoffs become more of a half-court game at times (and) less fast breaks,” said Heggie.
“So we will need to be discipline (on) offence and defence.”
Heggie spoke about what he has liked in the second half of the season from his team.
“We’ve added some more offence to the team,” he said.
“We have improved our ball movement and rebounding for sure. We have also had some players that have risen to the challenge when called upon to play a bigger role (in) any given game.”
The team has gone 7-3 in the second half.
“We have won some big games over nationally ranked teams this term, so we have shown our potential,” said Heggie.
“ We still have a ceiling to get to yet.”
