Kodiaks hopeful to use key strengths in ACAC Championship

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team finished atop the South Division standings with an 18-3 record and will begin the ACAC championship on home court tomorrow night.

“We’re just to trying to focus on the things that have got us to this point and that’s playing good defence, and rebounding, and playing together and all of those things in practice will be focused on this week,” said Ken McMurray, Kodiaks head coach.

The Kodiaks will also focus on fine tuning things around execution.

McMurray would like to see ball sharing and playing as one continue through in the championships.

“I mean at this point in the season, it doesn’t really matter who scores, as long we get the best bucket every time we head down the court,” said McMurray.

“And then of course just continue to play hard-nosed defence and leave everything out on the court and I think if we continue to do that we’ll be in good shape.”

McMurray sees the championship of trying to win each quarter.

“There’s no good in looking to the future because you’re playing in the now and so we have to break games down like that,” said McMurray.

McMurray will look to players like Hannah Helton, Courtney Deemter and Jocelyn Neilson to lead the way.

“I mean those girls just got to continue to play well and lead the team and I think the rest will follow,” said McMurray.

The girls won their last two home games on home court last weekend to solidify first place.  

“The girls rose up to the occasion and played a really good weekend,” said McMurray.

“I thought they played really good defence on the weekend and they shared the ball. (In) both games we had close to 20 assists and so that kind of is a barometer of how you’re sharing the basketball and so I was really happy with that.”

The Kodiak women’s will host Briercrest  at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

The playoff format is the top five teams from the North and South Division advance to the divisional round over this weekend and the two remaining winners advancing to the final four the following weekend.

Lethbridge will host the final four next weekend if they win tomorrow night and if they lose they’re eliminated and the highest remaining South Division seed will host.
