The Catholic Central Cougars senior girls rugby team come into the season with a more of an athleticism approach and a strong core of players that will hopefully lead them to success.

“We have been focusing more this year on cardio and being able to keep up with each other and with the other teams” said Cougars head coach Dez Prete.

“Last year, that is where I found  we were lacking a little bit.”

Last year was the first time that CCH has a senior boys or girls rugby team since 2012.

“We had a really awesome team last year,” said Prete.

“It’s  been not too much of a switch from last year to this year. Just focusing  a little bit more on some of the stuff that we didn’t learn last year. So all the stuff we needed to improve on like cardio, being able to run and keep up.”

Having strong players will be the team’s strength this season.

“Both our backs and our forwards are all very tough this year,” she said.

“So they can take a hit. I’m excited to see that.”

The Cougars have  players that have never played rugby and many returning Grade 12s that make up most of the roster.

“So I have a lot of girls who are willing to take up that leader role which is amazing to see,” said Prete.

Prete will rely on newly appointed captain Sydney McDonald and Kate Huculak.

“They’re both very strong and are willing to help me being a new coach,” said Prete.

“They’re willing to correct me if I do something or take up something that I’ve missed.”

Prete is looking forward to seeing how the forwards, line outs and tackles progress.

“We’re super excited for the season,” said Huculak.

We have a lot of new girls for it and we’re just really excited to build up the rugby community. It’s our second year having a team, so we’re just trying to get as many people interested as possible.”
