Shannon Phillips’ announcement of her resignation on Monday has prompted reaction from different quarters.

Kathleen Ganley, MLA for Calgary Mountain View and a candidate for the provincial NDP leadership, met Phillips back in 2012 and even though Phillips was very busy, she still took the time to show her the ropes.

“She has done an incredible job, both with me and many other members of our caucus, of showing us the ropes in those initial days,” said Ganley.

Phillips was passionate about supporting Indigenous people both in the city and on the reserves.

“She has been an incredible advocate for making sure that they get sufficient funding and that there are sufficient services available and just generally for the City of Lethbridge,” said Ganley.

Some of these services included the Cavendish Farms Centre and the Science Commons building at the University of Lethbridge.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says her support for these buildings have made a significant impact on the City of Lethbridge.

“Shannon and I have always had the common goal of supporting our city. She was a major supporter and advocate for the Cavendish Farms Centre leisure facility on the westside and for the University of Lethbridge Science Commons building. Both facilities will have longstanding significance for our city,” said Hyggen.

Nathan Neudorf, UCP MLA for Lethbridge East, thanked Phillips’ for her service.

“Shannon Phillips has shown herself to be a passionate advocate over the years, and I thank her for her nine years of public service. I wish her the best in her future endeavours,” said Neudorf.

Phillips was very passionate about environmental issues and was a pivotal advocate for them.

“Shannon was an important leader in the Alberta NDP government and played a pivotal role in making sure country-leading environmental progress happened right here in Alberta,” said Rachel Notley, Leader of the Alberta NDP.

Phillips will be dearly missed by her colleagues, as she put everything she had into the work she did.

“She will definitely be missed. She’ll be extremely difficult to replace what she does for us and our caucus and and for the party as well,” said Ganley.

THANK YOU! (for resigning)

Mr. Pereverseff, no need to be a D-bag!

Prosecute the police that systematically harassed Phillips and others. Do an inquiry into behaviours by police and make police apologize and pay for their crimes through jail time. That won’t bring Phillips back but it might stop it from happening again. The Crown shadowed by Smith gave police a free ticket to harass NDP reps and members. Smith is cultivating right wing authoritarianism across Alberta and in our police.

You’re about a year behind. Police have already been demoted, and one resigned. ASIRT investigated, recommended charges, Crown Prosecutors Office is NOT laying charges. Yell all you want, all action has been taken. What is left? Phillips civil lawsuit.
