LYSENG, Diane Lyseng, Diane Mizue January 28, 1944 – June 28, 2024 Diane, beloved mother of Stephan and Kari, passed away suddenly at home, in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, June 28, 2024.
Diane was born on January 28, 1944 in Tashme, British Columbia to Hatsu and Kazuichi Shimozawa. She was the youngest of nine children. Her family left internment in 1946 and immigrated to southern Alberta, where they worked on multiple farms. From there the family moved to Lethbridge where Diane attended high school.
Diane left Lethbridge for a life in the big city of Calgary. She married Gary Lyseng in 1965. Their daughter, Kari was born in 1970 and son, Stephan in 1972. Diane lived for her children; providing support and care to them always. She had a special bond with her only grandson Oren and it would be fair to say that he was her favorite person in the universe.
Diane believed that no orphan should be alone on a holiday and no one should go hungry and as the result, she has a multitude of people who perceive her as their second Mom. She possessed an uncanny talent for crochet and frequently made afghans for the latest bride or new mom. Diane also had a legendary stink eye that would strike fear into the most hardened of individuals.
She worked for many years in office administration and in 2000 she and Stephan started their own business; Ironwill Tattoo. They drove this business for 13 years until she retired.
At Diane’s request, there will be no service.
Diane has the highest Cookie Jam level achievement, higher than anyone’s ever seen.

MURRAY, Alice ALICE MAY MURRAY 1940 – 2024 Mrs. Alice May Murray (Kaupp) of Lethbridge, formally of Warner, beloved wife of the late Mr. James B. Murray, passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the age of 84 years.
Born June 1, 1940, in Lethbridge, Alice received her education in New Dayton and Warner. She then went on to attend a Secretarial College in Lethbridge.
Mom married James Murray on November 12, 1960, in Warner. After living in Lethbridge for three years, they moved to the family farm in Warner.
After all the children were in school, she worked part time at the County of Warner, then for family and community support services and the health unit.
Mom did volunteer work in the community and Our Lady of Lourdes Church where she was an organist for many years.
In 2010, mom and dad moved to Lethbridge. Throughout the years Alice was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Alice is survived by her children Karen (Derek), Michael (Maureen), Heather, Glen (Susan); grandchildren Nyx, Riley, Delaney, Sam, Melanie, and Rachel.
She is also survived by two sisters Fran (Bill) McQuaig, Joyce (Roger) Reilander; two brothers Charles Kaupp, and Jim (Joan) Kaupp; and many nieces and nephews.
Alice was predeceased by her husband James; son Daniel; daughter Joan; parents Cletus and Magdalena Kaupp; brother Bob Kaupp; and in laws Charles and Doris Murray.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

KANANEN, Betty KANANEN Born June 17, 1924 in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, England.
Our beloved Mom, BETTY A KANANEN, passed away peacefully in her home on July 1st, 2024. Mom lived her life with a great sense of humour, grace and dignity. She enjoyed nature, reading and travelling with family. She was especially fond of the ocean. We all have many happy memories of our adventures with her.
We were blessed to have had a special 100th Birthday Celebration/Family Reunion in Calgary on June 15th. Mom also spent a number of days at the cabin after the event, returning home on June 26th.
Mom is survived by her daughters; Patricia, Karen (Tom), Geneva, and Hazel. Her sons; David (Carole), Allan (Tricia). Her daughter in law; Paulette, 8 Grandchildren, and 10 Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2006 and her son Robert in 2021.
Our love and appreciation to Hazel for her exceptional care of Mom. A special thank you to Jim and Linda McCann for their kindness and friendship over the years.
As per Mom’s wishes, there will be no service.

WINKLER, Mary WINKLER MARY WINKLER, of Lethbridge, born on April 12, 1937, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, June 25, 2024 at the age of 87 years. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Carl Winkler, spending a loving 49 years together.
Mary is survived by her sister Elsie Kenney and brother David Halvorsen; children: Chuck Winkler, Gary Winkler, and Cindy Oler (Randy Oler); grandchildren: Dan Winkler (Mimi Winkler), Dustin Winkler, Lacey Stafford (Josh Stafford), Cody Oler, Dylan Oler, and Jessica Oler; and great-grandchildren: Daniel Winkler, Ryder Stafford, and Parker Stafford.
Mary and Carl had a love for motorcycles for many years before bravely packing up the family and moving to Algeria, where they spent many years travelling around the world and making lifelong friends. After returning to Alberta, Mary began her career as a Medical Receptionist for Alberta Children’s Hospital for over 17 years and then retired to Stirling, AB. Mary spent many years happily camping with friends and family, attending to her garden, enjoying companionship of her beloved pets, Mya and Carly, and bowling with Carl and the rest of their league.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held at the STIRLING COMMUNITY CENTRE, 409 – 2 Street, Stirling, AB, on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, from 11:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. All are welcome who knew and loved Mary to come and pay their respects and share memories.

SMULDERS, Edith SMULDERS EDITH SMULDERS, of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Edward Smulders, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Cedar Creek Adaptacare on Monday, July 1, 2024 at the age of 95 years.
Born in K̦ln, Germany in 1929, Edith came to Canada in 1958 where she joined her husband Edward, who was studying at UBC in Vancouver, BC. They enjoyed living by the coast for a few years and welcomed their son, Ralph. Innisfail, Alberta was their next stop, where Edith happily settled into raising a family, which included the birth of their daughter, Inga. Lethbridge soon became their permanent home, where they settled into a house on the south side. Edith enjoyed so many activities with the children, from skiing, to bowling, and happily welcomed their third child Рdaughter Karen into the busy Smulders family.
Edith loved her family and being involved in the community – she was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 25 years, bowled with the local league – bringing many prizes home, active in her church, and the 702 Wing League, but most of all, she was happily involved in keeping her kids in sports and dance activities – with many camping and skiing trips on the weekends. She skied and swam many lengths well into her late 70s.
Family meant everything to our Oma. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Karen (Chris) and Inga (Bruce); and her grandchildren: Kaylee (Curtis), Courtney (Kevin), Karissa (Scott), Rory (Meagan), and Maxton (Hayley); and great grandchildren, Raylee and Hayes.
Edith was preceded by her husband, Edward in 2023 and her son Ralph in 2021.
Edith’s opinion was very respected by her family and friends, and she often gave loving advice to family matters. Edith held strong to her Catholic faith, and her dedication to her family and friends will long be remembered.
Thank you to Cedar Creek Adaptacare and their caring staff.
Oma will be deeply missed by all those she knew and loved in her lifetime.

BOURKE, Myles BOURKE MYLES EUGENE BOURKE, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Betty (Elizabeth Anne), passed away on July 3rd, 2024.
Myles was born December 2nd, 1941 in Kapuskasing, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce, and achieved his Chartered Accountant designation in 1968. Betty and Myles were married August 7, 1965 in Toronto and moved their family to Lethbridge in 1973.
His career with KPMG spanned from 1967 to 2001, then he was involved with various committees and President of Alberta’s Institute of Chartered Accountants from 2000 to 2005. He was corporate director for certain Lethbridge companies, then served on the National Board of Management of the Canada Revenue Agency from 2005 to 2018.
His favourite activities were downhill skiing and hiking. He regularly skied all the mountains within a two-day radius of home, and frequented the trails of Waterton Glacier Park with family and friends. He enjoyed travelling with his family, and was fortunate to make multiple cross Canada trips through his work in KPMG’s Research and Training Department and as office inspector. His family was blessed by the friendships made through the monthly Bridge group and annual family Christmas gift exchange. Myles enjoyed cards, board games, and jazz.
Myles had a generous heart, sharing his gifts of organization, planning, and bringing people together. Known for his fundraising abilities, he Chaired the Rotary Lobsterfest and Knights of Columbus Western Tailgate Party for many years. He was active in Rotary, serving as president 1997-98, district treasurer 1994-95, and the Chair of the Friendship Exchange Committee 1999-2000. In later years Myles was active with the Knights of Columbus, Grand Knight of the St. Martha council 2014-16, president of the Southern Alberta Chapter 2016-19, and District Deputy 2018-2020.
Myles enjoyed his community work, which included the Homebuilders Association of Lethbridge, Historama Lethbridge, Lethbridge Exhibition, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, City of Lethbridge Economic Development Committee (Chair 1985-86), Chinook Country Tourist Association, Lethbridge West PC Association, Lethbridge and District Business Development Centre, University of Lethbridge Senate and Board, CESO, and Lethbridge Airshow Board. Myles was elected Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2004, received the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and named Grand Knight of the Year for Alberta and NWT in 2016.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Betty of almost 59 years, daughters Robin (Sister M. Benedicta, FSGM), Kelly and Katherine, siblings Louise Kozlowski, Michael (Wendy) and their children and grandchildren, David (Shannon) and their children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Eugene and Irene Bourke and brother-in-law Bob Kozlowski.
Relatives and Friends are invited to Prayer Services at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Boulevard W., Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, July 8, 2024 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Michael Pollard officiating.

HAMILTON, Isabelle HAMILTON It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of ISABELLE MARIE HAMILTON, beloved wife of the late John Hamilton, at Good Samaritan Vista Village in Pincher Creek on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at the age of 96.
Besides her loving husband John, Isabelle is predeceased by her son, Douglas.
Born in 1928 in Nakusp, B.C. to Agnes and Norman Moxham, Isabelle was surrounded by a loving family; sisters, Lillian (Harold) Lynns, Agnes (Kevin) Mailey and Doris (John) Mailey were balanced by the solo brother, George (Bea) Moxham.
Isabelle and John Hamilton married in 1948 and began their journey through life which included moving from Trail, B.C. to Vancouver, to Calgary, to Ottawa, to Saskatoon, to Regina, and finally, to Lethbridge. In their travels, they had five children: Gail DeMontigny, Douglas Hamilton, Gordon Hamilton, Susan Hamilton and Sharon (Geordie) Peat. Sue’s family includes: Jeremiah Archambault, Bessie Prevost, Sharon Prevost and Nate Campbell; and Sharon’s family includes: Geordie Peat, Campbell Peat, and Jackie Peat (Marc Edwards). Isabelle also adored her numerous nieces and nephews as well as her godchildren.
The Hamilton family’s arrival in Lethbridge was due to the inception of the University of Lethbridge and John’s position as the first professor in the Psychology Department. Their home was often the location of university faculty parties. When John died in 1975, Isabelle bravely forged on by opening her own giftware store, “L’Atelier”. She later went on to open “Sunliner Construction”.
Isabelle was an artist who pursued her passion for visual art throughout her entire life. Dedicated to a healthy visual arts community in Lethbridge, she was involved in the formation of The Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Her work in watercolour and landscapes was recognized by two Canadian Council Grants, which she used to spend summers painting in the Canadian Arctic.
Orchid enthusiast, bridge player and world traveller are only a few of the hats she often wore.
In her final days, Isabelle was blessed to have the excellent care of the staff of Vista Village, Pincher Creek, and the attention of Dr. Tracy Burton. Their efforts made Isabelle’s last days comfortable. The entire Moxham/Hamilton family is thankful for their efforts on Isabelle’s behalf.
A Celebration of Isabelle’s Life will be held at THE NORLAND HISTORIC ESTATE, 5801 – 1 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. The Celebration of Life will be live-streamed and may be viewed through Isabelle’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.

KESLER, Norman KESLER WALLACE NORMAN KESLER beloved husband of the late Karen Kesler passed away peacefully on July 3, 2024 in Raymond AB. Norman was born March 19, 1944 in Magrath, AB to Leonard and Ruth Kesler. Norman is pre-deceased by his wife Karen Kesler, parents Leonard and Ruth Kesler and his Sister Elenor Conrad. Norman was raised on the family farm near New Dayton. In 1962 he joined the Navy and spent the next 20 plus years serving our country and traveling the world. In 1965 he married Karen (Bourne) Kesler of Lethbridge. They had 3 children: Debi, Michael and Kevin. After Norman retired the Navy the family was moved to Raymond and Norman took a job as a Corrections Officer and served in that capacity for 20 more years. Norman also served for well over 20 years on the Raymond Fire Department. Norman was an avid hunter and fisherman, getting out every chance he got. Norman could also be found either curling or watching curling. He is survived by his children and grandchildren Debi (Kesler) Kanyo (Bob, Ilona, Derek), Michael Kesler (Amber, Deekota (Anna-Jo), Breann, Kobin, Ashlynn, Layne (Rebekah, Willow and Quintin) and Kevin Kesler (Patti, Teagan, Macy). He is also survived by his brother Gordon (Joyce) Kesler, sister Trudie Fyfe, sister in-law Karen Bourne and brother in-law Stewart McLeod. Viewing will be Monday July 8, 2024 from 7-8PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Knight Street Chapel (260E 200N) Raymond, AB. The funeral service will be held Tuesday July 9, 2024 at 1PM at the same location with internment to follow at the Raymond Temple Hill Cemetery.

WOODRUFF, Edward EDWARD (TED) L. WOODRUFF Ted Woodruff of Lethbridge, husband of Jean Woodruff passed away at Edith Cavell on Sunday June 30, 2024 at the age of 72 years.
His family includes 5 children, Steven (Jacquie), Heather; Shawn (Angie); Lara; Annabel; and 9 Grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; Ned and Elma. He has 3 brothers and 1 sister.
He was born in Lethbridge, lived most his life in Picture Butte. Ted was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of his life. He volunteered for meals on wheels for 30 years for most of his life. Ted sang in a Men’s Chorus for various events for many years.
A Funeral Service will be at 11:00am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Centre (560 Highland Blvd. W) Monday July 8, 2024. Friends meet family will take place prior to the service from 10:00-10:45am. An evening viewing will also take place Sunday July 7, 2024 7:00-8:00pm at Salmon and Sons Funeral Home (433 Stubb Ross Rd. S Lethbridge, AB)

TILLACK, James JAMES TILLACK July 15, 1930 ~ June 13, 2024 Jim Tillack, of Pincher Creek, beloved husband of Mrs. Gayle Tillack, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the age of 93 years.
Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Geraldine; an infant granddaughter, Lyndi-Jo LeBel; son-in-law, Lionel LeBel; his parents, Francis and Wilford Tillack; an infant brother, Ronald; an older brother, Dean (Bill) Tillack and wife, Lois; sister, Marianne (Penny) Sallenbach; and brother-in-law, Frank Dawley.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle; son, Jim (Judy) Tillack; daughters, Debbie (Eugene) LeBel, Jackie (Greg) Folsom and their families; brother-in-law, Ted Sallenbach and family, and brother-in-law, Wayne Walper.
Jim has eight grandchildren (one deceased), ten great- grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Jim loved, and was loved, by all his family.
Jim enjoyed driving, carpentry, fishing, sports, hunting, and being in the great outdoors. He was known for his outstanding chilli.
He was a storyteller extraordinaire.
