It wasn’t easy but Team B.C.’s Mount Seymour Junior Little League baseball team was able to overcome a push by Team Quebec to win the Canadian Junior Little League Championship with a 22-11 victory on Wednesday night at Spitz Stadium.

Mount Seymour got an early lead, as they found themselves up 10-2 after the second inning.

“Then the Quebec team clawed back, clawed back, clawed back, and then all of sudden it was 11-11,” said Mount Seymour assistant coach Ken Anderson.

B.C. won the championship in six innings after scoring a flurry of runs and the mercy rule coming into effect after a 10-run lead.

“Then late in the game we had a one-inning rally and we had a lot of momentum going and (the)  boys scored a lot of runs. And next thing you know, it was 22-11 and that was the final score,” said Anderson.

What worked for B.C.  in prevailing was they were in tight games in the previous couple of games.

“ They faced adversity and came back in the two previous games including the semi-final,” said Anderson.

“So at least they felt that pressure in the day or two leading up and we just ask them to remember yesterday fellas when we were down. You guys came back, we can do it again and sure enough they did.”

The only concern B.C. had was with their hitting and going up against strong pitchers from Quebec.

“We needed our bats to come alive and they really came alive in that championship game,” said Anderson.

“The boys hit the ball incredibly well, we did not hit a home run the entire tournament, but in the championship game we hit three and one of those home runs was a grand slam.”

There was a feeling of excitement and tears with family members and kids after the game.

“Mount Seymour Little League is just a small neighbourhood of North Vancouver,” said Anderson.

“The league is  (ran) by volunteers, all the coaches are volunteers. So to have a volunteer Little League organization represent the district, represent the province and now represent the country at the World Series is huge.”

Mount Seymour will now compete for a Little League World Series crown in Taylor, Mich., beginning Sunday.
