New West Theatre is presenting Totally 80s – a musical production of everything from the 1980s, which received a well-deserved standing ovation on Wednesday night.

To be totally transparent I am a young millennial, born mid-90s, or as I like to say a zillennial-not quite a millennial, not quite gen-Z, however I grew up with music blaring in my room with everything from rock, pop and, to my parents’ dismay, rap. So I definitely have music knowledge at my young age.

The evening started with a beautiful land acknowledgment, which included traditional Indigenous music that added a beautiful touch I hadn’t seen. My friend, who is Blackfoot, agreed it was beautifully done.

After the land acknowledgement came nothing but hits, laughter and nostalgia.

There were incredible performances of hits such as Material Girl, Africa, We’re Not Going to Take it, It’s Raining Men, and so much more. I was dancing in my seat the entire time. The performers did such a phenomenal job singing that there were moments when I truly thought I was at each of the ’80s superstars’ concerts.

This show wasn’t just singing, though. There were so many puns and jokes shared in between acts. I was in stitches, even the cheesiest puns got me cracking up.

When there weren’t puns and jokes between the acts to entertain the audience, there were nostalgic commercials such as Super Mario.

Of course, I can’t write something on the ’80s without mentioning the fashion, The hair, makeup and the clothes were all spectacular. There was so much neon, glitter and funky patterns. To be honest I was a little envious of the costumes.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this production as there were no set characters and no plot, however I did not leave disappointed. The production flowed very well and there was never a dull moment.

Overall, I recommend this show to everyone. There is something for the music lover, dad-joke and pun lovers, anyone who is “80’s old” and everyone who is not “80’s old.” I will feel nostalgic about this production when I hear any of the songs. “Totally 80’s” was totally rad.

“Totally 80’s” runs Tuesday through Saturday until Aug. 24. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. There is also a Saturday matinee show at 1 p.m.

This show is appropriate for all ages and I recommend taking your family to support the local arts.

Tickets can be purchased at the Yates Theatre box office or online at visitlethbridgearena.evenue.net
