Cameron Schmidt scored 12 seconds into overtime to lift the Vancouver Giants to a 4-3 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
Mazden Leslie and Connor Levis drew the assists on the overtime winner.
“I think to a man we just didn’t work hard enough (or) compete hard enough tonight,” said Canes associated head coach Matt Anholt to Dustin Forbes of 106.7 rock.
Anholt was asked about the sluggishness and how that perhaps factored in to only having one game in the last 12 days.
“Yeah a little bit,” said Anholt.
“I think there’s lots (of) guys on our team that looked a little bit tired tonight with the amount (of) ice time they were given.”
Lethbridge scored first when Logan Wormald finished a 2-on-1 play with Brayden Edwards for a shorthanded goal 8:51 into the first period.
Vancouver would get one back when former Cane Tyson Zimmer put a rebound into an empty net from Ty Halaburta and Marek Howell 1:38 into the second.
Tyler Thorpe gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead when he sniped it under the bar past Brady Smith from Halaburta and Ryan Lin at 5:34.
Leo Braillard tipped a Logan McCutcheon point shot in at 10:55 of the third period to tie the game at two.
Will Sharpe also notched an assist on Braillard’s goal.
Kooper Gizowski deposited a bouncing puck into the net to give Lethbridge a 3-2 lead 13:16 into the third period on the powerplay.
Sharpe and Braillard assisted on Gizowski’s goal.
Vancouver tied the game with three-and-a-half minutes to go in the third period as Aaron Obobaifo found the back of the net from Levis and Leslie to send the game to overtime.
Lethbridge went 1-for-4 while Vancouver went 0-for-4 on the powerplay.
