Pronghorns’ Moffat named Canada West Coach of the Year

Graeme Moffat was a first time winner of the Canada West Coach of the Year award this season.

While University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s 15s rugby team ended its season with a bronze medal at Canada West Championships over the weekend, their head coach was also rewarded for his efforts this season.

Graeme Moffat was awarded as Canada West Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.

Moffat led the Horns to a 4-2 regular season record, a sweep through the Alberta university teams for the first time in 13 years, going undefeated on home turf, taking the Suggitt Cup over the University of Alberta, obtaining a higher win percentage and seeing his team score more bonus points and trys.

“Typically these things go (to) the coach that wins the tournament. So I was quite surprised when they called my name out,” said Moffat.

Moffat said, “I mean absolutely,” when asked about if the on-field play by the girls helped in him getting this award.

“The girls have had a fantastic season and I’m extremely fortunate that I’ve got some brilliant assistant coaches too that are incredibly committed and worked really hard,” said Moffat.

Since taking over the rugby team, Moffat has been about giving the girls the best experience possible, many opportunities to connect and being cohesive.

“The girls have been (enjoying) each other’s company for the most part and they’ve done a really good job of banding together,” said Moffat.

The Horns’ MacKenzie Hutten and Charli Helland were selected to the Canada West All-Star team.
