Newly elected Lethbridge West MLA Rob Miyashiro will be leaving behind his long-term role as executive director of Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization to take on his new role as the MLA for Lethbridge West.
“I am super excited to take the next steps,” he said Thursday. “I am honoured and humble that the people of Lethbridge West selected me to represent them. It’s a big job and a big responsibility but I am up to the task.”
Miyashiro got to work within a matter of hours after being elected Wednesday night. As of Thursday afternoon, he’d already spoken with members of the Legislature and started to set up meetings for mid-January to go through an orientation process every new MLA undergoes to become familiar with the ins and outs of the position.
“I have also spoken with the speaker of the House and had a nice welcome to the House,” he said. “I will briefly talk to the caucus this afternoon, joining them for their last meeting of the year to thank them for their support.”
He pointed out that he’s actually MLA-elect because the electoral count doesn’t become official until Saturday. He won’t officially become an MLA until Jan. 7, the starting date of the next sitting the Legislature.
In the meantime, he’ll be busy transitioning from one role to the other. On Saturday, he will be helping out at the multicultural centre for its Community Christmas dinner and will be going back to work at LSCO on Monday.
“I will just keep working until I finish everything that needs to be done at LSCO before I take on my new position,” said Miyashiro.
Leaving LSCO will be bittersweet, he said, as he has been there for almost 17 years. But he’s confident the organization is in good hands, as his staff demonstrated while he was campaigning for the byelection.
“(The staff) are very competent in what they do.”
The LSCO will be posting to fill his position immediately, as the board has been preparing for the situation for some time.
Like all MLAs, Miyashiro will have to maintain a residence in Edmonton during the session, but he said he plans to return Lethbridge on weekends.
