Alberta’s ‘Third Mountain Destination’ Is Like Banff Or Jasper Without the Crowds

By Britanny Burr on July 17, 2024.

If you love the mountains but you’re not into the crowds, you might be looking for alternatives to the classics. Well, luckily for you, Alberta is home to a lesser-known mountain destination that isn’t Banff or Jasper, meaning your serenity won’t be interrupted by tour buses and busy trails.

Nordegg, Alberta, is affectionately known as Alberta’s secret third mountain destination. This off-the-beaten-path rugged beauty is considered the magnificent backside of the Canadian Rockies. Nordegg offers a serene escape from the crowds of neighbouring Banff and Jasper National Parks. With its rich history, breathtaking scenery, and endless outdoor activities, Nordegg is a must on your summer adventure list.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Nordegg’s history is as intriguing as its landscape. This tiny hamlet is located in David Thompson Country, a region in west-central Alberta. The area is named after the 19th-century explorer who mapped much of western North America, and it has become a nature lover's dream. Nordegg is located approximately 300 km from Edmonton and Calgary, so it’s easily accessible for a day trip or a longer stay to explore the area.

Nordegg was once a thriving coal mining settlement. It began with the discovery of coal seams in the area. For decades, the Brazeau Collieries was one of the largest and most productive coal mining operations across Alberta. It drew miners and their families to this remote area, and the town flourished, boasting a population of over 2,500 at its peak, complete with a hospital, school, and local businesses.

By the mid-1950s, the eventual decline in the coal industry gave way to the shift from coal to oil and natural gas and thus led to the closure of the mines. This resulted in a dwindling population of the hamlet. Today, the town is less than 90 people and is hidden under the radar for many travellers.

The remnants of this once-bustling community can be explored through historical tours and the preserved ruins of the Brazeau Collieries, offering a fascinating glimpse into Alberta’s industrial past. Visitors can enjoy a tour of Brazeau Collieries Mine Site Industrial Museum, which was designated a National Historic Site in 2002.

Adventure Lovers Paradise

Nordegg is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty. The area is ideal for hikers, with over 65 trails, abundant lakes, dense forests, and stunning mountain scenery, including canyons, jagged peaks, glaciers, and rivers. One of Nordegg's biggest draws is its extensive network of hiking trails. Whether a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller, there’s a trail for you. Hiking, climbing, paddling, river-rafting, biking, camping, photography, or simply taking in the beauty of Alberta, Nordegg offers it all. Here are a few that top the list.

Whitegoat Falls

This relatively easy hike rewards you with a stunning waterfall that packs a powerful punch. The 3.5 km trail meanders through lush forests nestled alongside a pretty creek, making it a perfect family-friendly adventure.

Siffleur Falls

This easy hike takes you along a suspension bridge, then through a breathtaking canyon, eventually finding your way to a series of beautiful cascading waterfalls. The trail offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Vision Quest

For those seeking a more demanding hike, Vision Quest is a must. The trail climbs steeply up to a ridge that offers panoramic views of Abraham Lake and the surrounding peaks. The effort is worth the trek, and you will be in awe of the stunning vistas at the top. Proper hiking gear, bear spray, and staying hydrated are a must for this impressive yet challenging trail.

Shunda Meadows

This is the perfect spot for a stroll through the beautiful meadows in search of fields of wildflowers. Set up camp or simply stop for a picnic and enjoy the pretty surroundings. You won’t regret exploring this jewel.

The scenery around Nordegg is nothing short of spectacular. Wildlife is abundant, with chances to see deer, elk, big-horned sheep, and perhaps the occasional bear. Bird lovers will be over the moon as they listen to the soothing melody of songbirds.

The beauty of Nordegg is that it's not aspiring to be a thriving tourist destination. Yes, it’s more rugged than its neighbouring National Parks, but that’s a part of its charm. A small hamlet tucked away in one of the most scenic locations in all of Alberta? Sounds pretty ideal to us!

Nordegg is a rare find, just waiting to be discovered. This summer, explore the lesser-known side of the Rockies and take the road less travelled.
