Kodiaks back in action this weekend

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball and volleyball teams return to the Val Matteotti Gymnasium this weekend.
They’ll also get a road game in as well as the court teams head into a home-and-home series with the Ambrose Lions in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action tonight and Saturday.
Tonight the volleyball teams get the home date as the women’s team hosts the Lions at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
The basketball teams are on the road in Calgary tonight to take on the Lions, but return to the Val Matteotti Gymnasium Saturday night with the women’s game at 6 p.m. and the men’s game at 8 p.m.
In volleyball, the men’s Kodiaks are coming off a split with the 7-1 Briercrest Clippers last weekend in Caronport, Sask, handing Briercrest their first loss of the season in the opener on Friday.
The split puts the Kodiaks at 5-3, good for fourth place in the ACAC South Division. The Lions are 2-7 heading into this weekend and in fifth place in the South.
Right side Jackson Gaehring leads the Kodiaks with 68 kills and 2.43 kills per set.
Nolan Moes has 65 kills and 2.41 per set. Moes is also third in the ACAC in service aces with 21 and is also tops on the Kodiaks in digs with 37.
Due to COVID concerns on the Clippers women’s volleyball team, the Kodiaks had last weekend’s games postponed.
They return to action tonight sitting at 5-2 and tied for third in the South Division with the Clippers (5-1) and the 5-5 Lions.
The Kodiaks last game was a 3-1 win over the SAIT Trojans Jan. 14 at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
Jamie Brown leads the Kodiaks with 78 kills this season, good for 13th in the ACAC and an average of 3.90 per set.
Mack Lewicki has 68 kills and 2.96 per set.
Kodiaks setter Johanna Dixon has 13 service aces this season to lead Lethbridge.
Defensively, Claire Armstrong has 12 blocked shots and Elyse Doble has 56 digs.
On the basketball court, the Kodiaks women bring an seven-game winning streak into the weekend that has them at 8-1 and in sole possession of first place in the South Division.
The Lions are 2-6.
Kodiaks Courtney Deemter and Kirsten Barwegen are fourth and fifth in the ACAC in points per game with 19 and 18, respectively. Deemter also has 3.1 steals per game.
Matlin Jacobs is averaging four assists per game.
The Kodiaks men have a three-game winning streak heading into the weekend that has improved them to 7-2 and into a tie for first with the 7-1 Lightning and the 7-2 Trojans.
Orin Porter leads the Kodiaks with 17.3 points per game, which is also good for 13th in the ACAC.
Jack Henry Fox-Grey leads the Kodiaks with 6.4 rebounds per game, while Timothy McMahon is second in the ACAC in steals per game with 2.8.
Both nights are Make Some Noise for Mental Health nights.
A 50 per cent fan capacity will be allowed for tonight and Saturday’s games, the mask policy and no food or drink regulations remain in place.
Saturday is also Junior and Senior High Appreciation Night with the doors opening at 5 p.m.
Admission is free for junior and senior high school students and chaperones with games for prizes and swag up for grabs.
Students can also win one of four Kodiaks’ summer sports camp passes valued at $190 each.
