A blaze severely damaged an old garage behind a home on 13 St. S. known to be a squatters’ encampment, fire officials say. The property is located almost directly across from London Road Market.
Lethbridge Fire/EMS were alerted Monday morning to the blaze by residents who called in what was thought to be a wildland situation because they saw trees on fire.
When fire crews arrived on scene, they discovered a garage ablaze behind a boarded-up home. Fire crews are familiar with the property because they had dealt with a blaze right next door at a shed and at a residence across the alley.
There was also some damage done to the siding of a garage next door to the north.
Warren Keith of Lethbridge Fire/EMS said Monday people who called in didn’t realize a garage was on fire “so we had to readjust our response plan. When we came here the garage was fully involved, crews immediately started putting water on the good garage to save that and as we got more crews here, we were able to put water on the fully engulfed garage” and extinguish it, he said.
“Once it gets into the eaves, it’s into the attic and then we can lose that garage. So the important thing is to actually put the water on the good building first,” Keith said.
The area is a squatters encampment, he said.
No damage estimate was available at press time.
