Canes rally for road win in Regina

By Dale Woodard on March 8, 2022.

As they continue their extended road trip, the Lethbridge Hurricanes dug deep to get back on the winning track.

The Canes topped the Regina Pats 5-4 in overtime in Western Hockey League action Saturday night in Regina.

Justin Hall scored his team-leading 29th goal of the season 1:50 into overtime and Jett Jones scored twice in the third period – including a last-minute marker to force overtime – as Lethbridge rallied from 3-0 and 4-2 deficits to post the win.

The win – which improves the Hurricanes to 23-25-2-1 and gives them sole possession of seventh place in the Eastern Conference – comes after a 6-3 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday and a 4-3 shootout win over the Winnipeg Ice last Wednesday to start the jaunt.

On Saturday, the Pats held a 4-2 lead after the second before Jones scored 1:13 into the third and tied the game with 39 seconds remaining to force overtime before Hall grabbed the extra point in the extra session.

The Pats jumped out to a 3-0 lead on first period goals by Connor Bedard and Braxton Whitehead and a second period marker from Tye Spencer 4:37 into the second period.

The Hurricanes pushed back to pull within one as Corson Hopwo scored a little under three minutes after Spencer and Ty Nash made it 4-2 with his 17th of the season 12:07 into the second.

Regina regained their two-goal lead with 1:48 left in the second on a goal from Tanner Howe before Jones cued the third period comeback.

Yegor Klavdiev and Alex Thacker each had three assists in Saturday’s win.

Bedard, Spencer and Howe each had an assist for the Pats for a two-point night.

Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson stopped 31 of 35 shots for his 15th win of the season that puts him at 15-19-2-1.

Drew Sim made 22 saves for the Pats as Regina outshot Lethbridge 35-27.

The Canes were 3-for-5 on the power play, while the Pats were 0-for-7.

The Hurricanes continue their road swing while the 2022 Tim Horton’s Brier continues to rock the Enmax Centre tonight in Prince Albert against the Raiders.

Game time is 6 p.m., local time.

The Hurricanes return to the Enmax Centre March 16 when the Pats come to town for a rematch at 7 p.m.
