Henderson Outdoor Pool was filled by the City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services on Tuesday.
Operations Coordinator for Recreation and Culture at the City of Lethbridge Garry Taylor said they normally fill the pool themselves through the filters but working with the fire department is much easier.
“Normally, it would take us 24 hours to fill the pool, this way will take four hours,” said Taylor.
The pool takes 385 000 gallons of water, with the operation not being done like this since Henderson was first built according to Taylor.
“We were behind schedule, and we wanted to open it faster,” said Taylor, “This is one way of filling it really fast and getting it open faster for the public.”
He explained the water treatment will take another day to complete as well. Taylor said the filling of the pool is “two business units from the city joining forces to make the public happy” after the pandemic reduced the ability to use the facilities.
Taylor added that the pool should be opening in the middle of June if everything continues as planned.
“Rec Ex (Recreation Excellence) is our operator, and they will determine when they can open, but I believe it is June 13th they’re looking at,” said Taylor.
The pool features a diving board, slides, climbing wall and spray park along with concession.
There are also barrier-free bathrooms and showers and gender-neutral change rooms available.
