The Lethbridge Bulls just added a little more pop to their line up after Canadian Brandon Nicoll arrived last week after making a run to the NCAA Division II World Series with Southern Arkansas University Muleriders.
In 60 games with the Muleriders, Nicoll compiled a .333 batting average with 14 home runs and 84 RBIs.
His 84 RBIS were tied for sixth in NCAA Division II baseball, he finished second in doubles with 26, tied for 18th in total bases with 157 and tied for 20th with 85 hits.
“The hitting coach at Southern Arkansas (Jacob Caples), he used to play here,” said Nicoll.
“So he asked me if I wanted to come play here and I was like ‘Yeah, like set it up. I’d be down.'”
His trip to the World Series instilled that winning mentality.
“I want to win,” said Nicoll.
“I feel like we have a real good chance of winning here from the three games I saw; the team looks really good. So I hope just to continue winning.”
While he has played a lot of baseball this season, his plan was always to continue playing through the summer.
“I just wanted to keep in a flow like not lose anything (and) play as long as I can,” he said.
Nicoll describes himself as an offensive player.
“I think as myself as a pretty aggressive hitter, I like to get up there and get my swings off early and often and hopefully it works,” he said.
“I’m a big doubles guy.”
He grew up playing most of his baseball in Parksville, B.C.
“There’s not a lot of baseball there,” he said.
“But the baseball that is there, it’s really good and I enjoyed playing there.”
Bull fans will notice that he will give it a 110 per cent every night.
Bulls head coach Chance Wheatley thinks Nicoll brings an element of power to the roster.
“We definitely have power throughout our lineup,” said Wheatley.
“So it just adds to it and he’s definitely a dangerous hitter at the plate. He’s an intimidating guy and he’s got a lot of bat speed. We’re really excited from what we’ve seen this weekend.”
