Producers connect at post-pandemic livestock expo

The Alberta Livestock Expo took place in Lethbridge Wednesday and Thursday down at Exhibition Park, connecting farmers in southern Alberta with all the latest in livestock production.

The two-day event saw over 100 exhibitors on the floor, with many plowing through the crowd to find out the latest in innovation.

“This is the first year we have been able to host the show after two years of restrictions and cancellations,” said Katie Tokaruk, event coordinator for the Expo. “Our show is geared towards livestock producers. It is an opportunity for southern Alberta producers to come and meet with various suppliers. We have genetic companies, feed companies, and veterinarians.”

Advanced Ag Products was one of the many exhibits at the event, showcasing its By-o-reg+ products.

“It’s a feed additive that farmers are using for chickens, cows, and hogs,” said Nick Korber, general manager for Advanced Ag. “It helps for gut health, building up the immune system in animals. A lot of farmers are trying to get away from medication. This is a natural way to use a product that does the same thing. It doesn’t have the residual effects that some antibiotics have.”

Other booths at the event looked to spread awareness on the work they do with farmers, like the Alberta Environment Farm Plan, which helps farmers with their commitment to environmental stewardship.

“It’s a whole farm environmental risk assessment that producers can do. It is based off of identifying risks, and then building a plan to mitigate, monitor, and reduce those risks. An education and awareness tool,” said Devon Lloyd, programs manager of AEFP. “We are hoping to create awareness and get people to sign up, learn about the program.”

The event had many exhibits showcasing their products and aid to farmers, helping connect to new regions and advance farms across the province.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to come together and meet in person. We have lost that face-to-face contact over the years, so this event is really special in that way,” said Tokaruk.
