Community band set to open season with Fall Concert

The Lethbridge Community Band Society is inviting members of the community to join them at their fall concert this weekend for an evening of music with a chance to dance to some of the tunes.

Event coordinator for the LCBS, Shay Bernard, said it is like a breath of fresh air that everyone is able to have in-person events again after not being able to do anything for such a long time.

“When COVID happened, a lot of our concerts, we had to scale some things back. We were not able to have people out to enjoy some of the live music and to be in the venue interacting, to get that warm fuzzy feeling that you do when you are enjoying a nice concert,” said Bernard.

She said they are hoping to invite the community out to play different instruments and familiar tunes, while enjoying some of the music that other members of the community are putting out there.

“Some of the music we decided to play that night will invoke some movement and hopefully get some people feeling good, get up and dance feeling,” said Bernard.

She said those in attendance will have the opportunity to jump out of their seat and dance to the tunes.

Bernard said that to be able to do events after two years of restrictions is invigorating.

“We haven’t been able to do it for so long out of fear and different things happening all around us. Life gets a bit crazy, it’s kind of like a deep breath of fresh air that I think we all need with an interjection of music, it’s a good feeling,” said Bernard.

She said she speaks for herself but she is sure other members of the LCBF share that feeling.

“It’s a family-friendly concert, children under 12 can attend for free and high school band students have the opportunity to attend free as well,” said Bernard.

She said for those who enjoy being part of the community, it is hoped the concert helps to inspire youth to get involved.

“You get to enjoy what your neighbours are doing at their leisure. You get to enjoy some of the music they can create and we are hoping to spark the new generation,” said Bernard.

She said they are very aware of how music helps kids with cognitive development, and they are hoping to ensure that foundation in music is there with school aged children and to help parents build on that.

“Taking a child to one of our concerts can definitely spark their interest as well as their awareness of instrumental music,” said Bernard.

She said everyone is welcome, and for those interested there will be hand sanitizer provided at the venue.

“Come as you are, come to enjoy,” said Bernard.

The concert will be held at College Drive Community Church on Saturday at 7 p.m.
