County reeve receives royal distinction at RMA conference

Lethbridge County Reeve Tory Campbell received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal this week at the Rural Municipalities of Alberta convention in Edmonton.

The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 70th anniversary of Her late Majesty’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. To celebrate this historic event, the Medal program recognizes outstanding service from Albertans who, like the Queen, dedicated themselves to family, community and country.

Campbell said he received the medal alongside approximately 60 other mayors and reeves from different communities across Alberta for their outstanding contributions to the betterment of their municipalities.

“It was very exciting, I’m really happy and really excited to have received it. There is roughly 7000 I believe given out in the province to a lot of very deserving Albertans, so to be included in that list was humbling and I’m very proud to have that accomplishment,” said Campbell.

He said he received the medal while attending the Rural Municipalities of Alberta Convention, which happens twice a year in the fall and in the spring, where mayors and reeves from across the province come together and there is usually an agenda discussing items that affect both individual and multiple municipalities.

“It’s our chance as municipal leaders to hear what’s going on in other municipalities, hear about challenges, opportunities and share how best we can move forward,” said Campbell.

Campbell, who is beginning his second year as reeve, said Lethbridge County council has identified some of the areas where they need to focus their efforts to continue the betterment of the county.

“Increasing our water and wastewater capabilities within the county, increasing development, attracting new businesses, while at the same time ensuring that we continue to maintain our roads and our infrastructure to support the current businesses and residents that call Lethbridge County home,” said Campbell.
