Family distraught after loss of home

Joanna Vold burst into tears Thursday when she pulled into the driveway of her home and saw windows covered with plywood and a steel mesh fence barricading her property.

Vold was home late Wednesday afternoon with her daughter and grandson when fire broke out on the lower floor of the north-facing bi-level house on Eagle Road North.

Crews from three fire stations responded to extinguish the fire which Vold said started in her daughter’s bedroom.

Damage to the home is estimated to be $150,000 and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

As she shot images of her home with a flip-phone, Vold said she was making supper around 4:30 p.m. when the fire started. She saw flames coming from the bedroom, adding her daughter sustained burns in the fire.

Vold and her family managed to escape the fire with two dogs. One cat, however, perished and another is missing. That 25-year-old cat, called Skeeter, is a blueish grey female and Vold is hoping it’s still alive although she fears her pet may not be. Anyone who sees the cat can call her at 587-370-8838.

She has lived in the home for more than 40 years, the anguished woman said.

Vold and her family are staying at a son’s for the present time and she has no idea what kind of condition her home and contents are in and if or when they’ll be allowed back inside.

All she can do is wait and wonder.
