A man caught in the act of stealing property from a Fort Macleod residence might have gotten away if he had just brought a horse with him.

But Grant Tyler Williams didn’t have anywhere to put the saddle he stole on Feb. 1, and when another man saw him with the saddle, and suspected he had stolen it, he chased Williams, who dropped the saddle and ran.

The owner of the residence later confirmed the saddle belonged to her and Williams had no right to have it in his possession.

Williams pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of theft under $5,000 and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He was credited for time he had already spent in custody, however, and released.

He is scheduled to return to court in Fort Macleod in July to address additional charges.
